EDIT: I am busy right now so I will add the information before the week starts.

Also questions to why Burris?
1) He is a new senator.
2) The mailing list choose him, so we should coordinate with them.
3) He probably supports, just want him to cosponsor it.

Also: Leave any suggestions.

Hi guys,

So the week starts tomorrow. I just wanted to throw out a suggestion.

Do these three things for the next 7 days. They should take more than a few minutes each.

1. Send an email everyday with the provided contact page above. Very easy.

2. Send a fax. If you have fax machine, send as many as you can. If you don't, use the website above that allows you to send free faxes. You are allowed 8 FREE faxes a day, so please use them. That should be 56 for the week, unless you are going to send some faxes to other senators.

3. Calling! This is the most important. Please if you aren't already calling Sen. Burris, make it a priority to do so everyday. We wont be able to get him to cosponsor unless we continue to call him staff. Please use the information above to call Senator Burris.

4. Visiting. Alaska wasn't exactly an easy place to visit, but I know many of you guys live in Illinois. With the Senate off for this week, could any of you all in Illinois take the time to visit Senator Burris office? This would be the most effective way to get him to cosponsor.

Also, when you call please post any useful information the staff may provide about what Sen. Burris will be doing in regards to the DREAM Act. Once we know he will become a cosponsor, we will move on to the next senator. You all can suggest who that senator will be.

Again, thank you for participating.

So far after calling, his staff doesn't know his position since he hasn't put out a statement on the Dream Act. He should support it, but it would be helpful if someone meet with his staff at his Chicago Senate Office, and pressure him to put out a statement.

It is mostly for the America's Voice Online, and emailing. Senator staff will only reply to emails from their constituents. Also, AVO faxing only lets you send it to your congress members. The "fake" zip codes are needed in these cases.

I put it under calling just in case, because some staff members usually put emphasis on their own constituents. I use my own zip codes for calling, but I just added the "fake" zip codes as an option for those who wanted to use it.

Also:

I'm not sure who was chosen as the senator of the week from the weekly emails, haven't seen it, so you guys can suggest who it should be. Week of April 19-25.

Statement from Burris:

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on the DREAM Act and the right of Illegal aliens to attain higher education. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Today thousands of minors live in the United States despite being illegal aliens. Oftentimes, they are brought into the country by parents and relatives looking for work and better lives for their families. Once here, these youth attend American schools and live traditional American lives, contributing their talents and energy to our great nation. Under current law, though, these students are ineligible for many higher education benefits, greatly hindering their ability to compete in a 21st Century economy where education is crucial.

I believe that we must make higher education accessible to all Americans. If we are to continue to lead the world in innovation and prosperity, we must help every American student reach his or her fullest potential. The DREAM Act is being sponsored in the Senate by Senator Durbin and will amend the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to make students who are illegal aliens eligible for higher education benefits. Currently, the bill has been introduced in the Senate and referred to the Judiciary Committee.

It is imperative that our government take action to prevent the disenfranchisement of large groups of people living within our borders. We are a better nation when everyone here has an opportunity to succeed, and I think that the DREAM Act will help us realize that goal. Rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind when this issue comes before the full Senate.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please feel free to do so again about any issue of importance to you.

Sincerely,

Roland W. Burris
United States Senator

Just to confirm his position.

After putting out the statement, Senator Burris has now cosponsored the DREAM Act.

A total of 23 senators have sponsored the DA.
