Maryland compromise on driver's license renewal closely watched

Immigrant rights advocates say they will be closely watching to see if Maryland's compromise on renewals works. But it's unclear whether illegal immigrants will choose to be singled out by getting licenses that look different. And some worry that the two kinds of licenses will lead to discrimination by police officers and court officials.

Does anyone know what states we can still get driver's licenses in?

For Some of you who obtained your Social security number while your visa was still valid, you can obtain a license in Arkansa, chicago and some cities in TX by providing the documents below:



- you will need to show your original S.S Card (it is ok even if it states "not valid for employment")
- Proof of residency/mailing address (it could be a piece of paper someone mailed you)
- sometimes they ask copy of your home country passport (it does not have to be valid)


As many of us, including me, have no papers.. we are stuck. Dream Act is the only way out.

You can obtain a social security if your visa's still valid? i have 2 more years in my visa. how exactly do i do this?

What kind of Visa do you have? I know you can do it if you have H1, even if it is temporary.
I don't know if they still do it but when we moved to FL in 2002, we needed a Social security number to get drivers license here. So we would go to the social security office and tell them we needed the number to get a license and so a social was issued. At that time I was too young to apply for a drivers license (under 16) hence, couldn't get a social. Someone told me they changed the law not too long ago.

My fathers friend who is an accountant told me you can get a Tax identification number (TIN) if you are legal. Doesn't matter under what Visa. I know some friends who go to college using the 9 digit TIN number.

You might want to call up an immigration lawyer. I aint no expert..just trying to help...
