White House disputes claims immigration reform is 'dead'

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that President Barack Obama and other administration officials would continue reaching out to lawmakers in both parties to gauge the extent to which immigration reform legislation is attainable this year.

"I, not surprisingly, would likely disagree with that characterization," Gibbs said during his daily press briefing in response to Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) claim last week that a bruising healthcare battle made immigration reform all but impossible in the Senate.

Graham had been partnering with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on potential comprehensive immigration reform legislation, about which they met with Obama earlier this month.

But the South Carolina Republican said that little political will was left to move forward on a politically thorny issue like immigration.

"This is not an issue that's going to be decided by just getting all the Democratic members to support immigration reform," Gibbs said. "There have to be Republicans that come aboard, too."

"Those conversations, the president is likely to have with Republican members in the near future," the press secretary added. "And we'll gauge whether or not it's possible to move forward on this issue."

Graham has challenged the administration to write its own immigration bill to move through the Congress, a challenge which Gibbs sidestepped on Tuesday, noting that the president finds a number of aspects in the Schumer-Graham proposal "greatly appealing."

It's not dead, I say.... but it's in critical condition, on life-support, and probably will not make to May.

Isn't the point of winning the election and having a seat in Congress, to have a majority and pretty much being able to pass laws that go along with the ideologiy of your party? What if the Dems. had 75 seats? Would they still be saying "Well we need a few Reps because ****?" If people in like Alabama don't want CIR that's their problem. The point of a centralized government with state representation is that you get a vote but that's it; if the rest of the country wants something else that's that. We already had a Civil War about this kind of representation and we know how that turned out for the South.

For like the Xth time I hear about this so called proposal, but does anybody have any info as to what is actually in there?

The only proposal to come out is the "blueprint" that Graham and Schumer released on 3/18/2010. There is a thread on here with what they had to say.

Thanks, do you remember the article title by any chance. There are so many threads in the news section and they do not show the date on which they were posted, so that its hard to find anything.

Translation: "...[b]to gauge the extent to which immigration reform legislation is attainable this year[/B." , means "We do not KNOW IF we can do this since we haven't done ANYTHING to progress it in the last 15 months. And we will only do it IF the other side does part of our job for us". Does anyone know/seen/read/heard what's happened to Gutierrez? For two months he was on the news, web, and in print just about daily, and now that he voted for insurance reform, he's MIA.
