Some of the 11 senators whose support is critical to his plans signaled Thursday that they are not ready to back reform this time around. They also denied that they had changed their positions for political reasons.
Laena Fallon, a spokeswoman for Sen. Judd Gregg (N.H.), said the senator is interested in fixing the immigration system. But she added that he had made it clear he "does not support any initiative promoting comprehensive reform

Andy Fisher, a spokesman for Sen. Richard G. Lugar (Ind.), said the senator thinks it is simply the wrong moment for reform. "There really is not the political landscape to proceed with it at this time," he said.
Other minor legislation, designed to legalize those who came to the United States as children and then enrolled in U.S. colleges, "could potentially be doable this year," the spokesman said.

What is it going to take to convince RI4A and the congressional Hispanic caucus to support the dream act as a down-payment to immigration reform this year? Lugar has been in the senate a long time and I'm sure he knows what he is talking about.

CIR is dead this year. Pass Dream at least. No way to get 11 Reps on board. Obama should press Dems who vote "no" to change their minds and get couple of Reps on board.
Overall, it was just another speech to get Latino votes and to blame Reps for not coming along. Same speeches were given when they tried to pass Health reform. In the end no Reps came along anyway so it was complete waste of time.

Very dissapointed with Obama. The speech was nothing but vote pandering and worst of all is that all those mostly latino organizations who met with him apparently approved of it. It's shameful. Anything other than action is BS. Deportations are way over the quota under W. Incredible. The least he could have done is make use of his executive power to stop the deportation of families, students, serving military men and women, since he has already admitted and most people agree that the immigration system is not working. Obviously not a secret but it's taken this long to make the public aware of the problem and have a general consensus.

Vote pandering 2.0 for all the groups the Pres and Dems have pissed off since 2008:

WASHINGTON — Architects of President Obama's 2008 victory are braced for potentially sizable Democratic losses in November's midterm elections. But they say voters' unease about a GOP takeover will help their party maintain congressional majorities.

"I think the prospect of a Republican takeover — while not likely, but plausible — will be very much part of the dynamic in October, and I think that will help us with turnout and some of this enthusiasm gap," said David Plouffe, who was Obama's campaign manager two years ago and is helping to oversee Democratic efforts this fall. Still, he put all Democrats on notice, saying: "We'd better act as a party as if the House and the Senate and every major governor's race is at stake and in danger, because they could be."

Plouffe and other Democratic strategists say Obama will play an important role in making the case that the Republican Party is one of obstruction and indifference. But they think the outcome in November will depend as much on the skill of candidates in mobilizing potential supporters who are now disinclined to vote.

Oh boy, did we see this in action yesterday! What a joke.
