Good lord, just what we needed on a Friday evening, and on the weekend of the progessive gathering @ NetRoots: Sen. Webb says affirmative action must end because the "plethora of government-enforced diversity policies have marginalized many white workers. The time has come to cease the false arguments and allow every American the benefit of a fair chance at the future."

Immigrants from Asia, Latin America and Africa in recent decades knew no such discrimination from the government, he wrote, "and in fact have frequently been the beneficiaries of special government programs. The same cannot be said of many hardworking white Americans, including those whose roots in America go back more than 200 years."

Such programs should end, Webb concluded, except for "our continuing obligation to assist those African-Americans still in need."

WTF??????!!!!!!!!! So now that we are closer to the elections conserva-dims are pulling off the mask and showing the real trolls they are? I smell tea.
Not to be outdone by the trolls that abound in Congress, he comes out and pens an editorial that is going to put everyone on the defensive for another month or two, distracting everyone, until a new 'issue' comes up. What is he thinking? He's not going to be re-elected after this...As a woman, and as an undocumented immigrant, I take particular issue with this because the only way women have been able to achieve equality in the workplace and sports has been thru affirmative action. You should know that Sen.Webb.

There are educational spots available in this country to any one who wishes to have one if they choose to do the study required. I am taking no one's spot @ work and I didn't take anyone's spot @ school. I earned them. Everything I've ever had since age 16, from my personal expenses, to tuition, to rent, food, to the financial aid I've at times provided to my family, have been paid with my hard-earned money. Don't race-bait me as a way to provide cover for others' incompetence and laziness. I have no sense of entitlement and ask to be given nothing, and that is why I fight for DreamAct only asking that I get the chance to continue earning my place in society. As if people- white or black, citizen or foreigner - like to struggle.

It's a difficult and challenging issue, no doubt, but does he say anything about the DREAM Act?

Well, if he feels that way about immigrants and minorities, do you think he will vote for the DreamAct?

It has huge potential to negatively affect Dream Act as soon as Republicans start using his name and op-ed column to hammer home the idea that Dream Act will take away college spots from American students (even though this isn't true). It surprised me, that's all. Feel free to move it from the news section, if you must, but this is a Senator running in a very conservative state, in a tight-race.

You're right, he does seem to have an anti-minority type of position.

That being said, I don't think the two issues necessarily mix. He might vote for the Dream Act because it's an issue of justice, whereas affirmative action is an issue of racial equality.

Talk about drawing a line between races and not being racist.
That's all it is, drawing lines with big thick color coded sharpies.
How did laziness and procastination ever help colonization.

He is up for re-election in 2012.

Did Mr. Webb ever thought that Americans who have roots in USA for over 200 years simply cannot get up to date with technology and modern world reality? Does he know that majority of Government welfare and other benefits are collected by whites with 200 year roots? They listen to Sarah Palin and such and believe to all nonsense coming out her mouth. Any person in his right mind will never listen Palin's schizophrenia. And all white people have exactly same fair and even chances that immigrants have. On top of that, English is their first language. They just don't use their opportunities. If some kid, no matter the race, cannot pass SAT and such he is just stupid. Plain and simple.
Look at NYC. Wall Street and majority of financial and management jobs are occupied by whites from all over America. Nobody denied them from obtaining education and their jobs. No immigrant took their jobs. There are some immigrants in those fields but whites prevail. EVERYONE has fair and even chance in USA. If immigrant gets hired vs US citizen with 200 year roots, then immigrant is just better suited for the job.

Mr. Webb reminds me of Palin and other crazies. Nonsense talk to appeal to aging population with 200 year old roots that lost touch with modern world reality. Mr. Webb seem to fit the category...
