I don't recall hearing anything mentioned about how he earned legal status though.
I suspect it might have been through marriage(?..) Since they mentioned that his wife has seen him go through all that.

I heard about this guy a few years ago. Mexico > all lol

I heard his story like 2 years ago. They missed some stuff. He didn't know English and had to learn it by taking night classes after working like 12 hrs a day. then in like 2 years he went on to college. He got legal status in 1987 when that amnesty was passed. Great story!
