2nd page.

"President Barack Obama supports the DREAM Act, which would allow illegal immigrants brought to this country as children by their parents to become legal residents - and eventually U.S. citizens - if they attend college or serve in the U.S. military for at least two years. The bill is aimed at helping people who came to the U.S. before the age of 16, have been here continuously for at least five years, are of good moral character, and are under age 35 on the date of enactment.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other Pentagon officials support the measure, saying it would boost military recruitment.

Opponents say the legislation would give amnesty to illegal immigrants and encourage more people to break the law. Supporters say it would offer a path to economic stability for immigrant children, allowing them to become productive residents of the nation they see as home.

Although Reid may gain votes from lame-duck senators such as Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., and retiring Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, he could face rebellion from the 10 Democrats expected to face tough re-election bids in two years.

"I can guarantee that we'll do everything we can to let the voters in those senators' states know two years from now that they voted to pass a loophole-ridden amnesty bill," said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, which wants to reduce the number of immigrants coming to the United States."

It's just saying there is a possibility that the Senate Democrats will rebel, no one knows what will really happen.

The only thing we know for sure almost all Republicans will vote against it in the Senate.

meh i dunno... 2years is a long time plus it's not like it's a horrible bill. I don't think i've seen too much on the media as far as the dream act is concerned...that includes faux news, but it could be thanks to the fact that murdoch supports dream or reps. are looking for latino votes down the line.

NumbersUSA, a bunch of animals; i wish them the worst to them and all their kids, i despise those dogs. they don't want immigration PERIOD, if they could, they would eliminate it all together. they throw these "we are for legal immigration" talking point that the masses will believe cause they will use emotion rather than their head to find solutions.

a bunch of pigs who always have wanted everyone out ever since they stepped foot in this land and slammed the door to those that came behind them.

KKK protests all over the streets of NYC to oppose waives of Italian immigrants back in the 1930's, and what was their reason then? "sustainability"?

2.5 mil people come here legally out of the blue and giving a chance to let 800,000 people here is a crime?... this thing has been waiting for 10 years. at this rate 25 mil more people have come to the U.S. and what did they win?... an easy arrival based on allot of fraud marriages and a corrupted lottery system. b/s fucking nation.

it ain't about how you come, its about what you do... Chinese immigrants have come to Albania and THEY don't throw trash on the floor and don't commit crimes, MY citizens of my country through trash and do w/e they want, so YES citizenship is just a piece of paper. a black and white simplicity.

I don't think so... That is just an assumption by some immigration reform opponents like those from NumbersUSA. Before going against the Democratic agenda for their re-elections, these Senators will have to win their candidacy in Democratic primary elections. Look at what happened to Senator Lincoln. She almost lost her candidacy because of her moderate or, possibly, conservative positions on some issues important for the Democratic base.

Also, there are two full years between this year's lame duck session and the next elections. People forget things so quickly that they sometimes don't remember which party did what. Look at the Republican Party. They did almost everything wrong and lost their control of the Congress. Now, they have the House!

I would agree with their assumption if the elections were less than a year away. When elections are less than one year away, lawmakers in danger tend to follow the current political wave. For instance, now, you are better off if you pretend to be conservative in swing states or districts.

Also, you can't perdict what the next political environment will look like. Two years ago, it was all about the Democratic wave. Now, it is a Republican wave. Despite the fact that the Democrats have the White House and the Senate, we cannot predict what will happen in 2012. In fact, if the Republicans in the House act like they did for the last two years, it might backfire. Their benefit of being a minority party and opposing everything is over. They will have to compromise with the Democrats if they want to pass their agenda items.

Also, the DREAM Act is not as large as the health care reform bill or, even, the immigration reform bill. While some anti-immigration groups and some hard-core Republican groups will use the voting record of these Senators on the DREAM Act, most American voters will have forgotten about the DREAM Act. Also, this bill doesn't have as pervasive an influence on the American voters as the health care reform, so these anti-immigration groups won't be able to "harvest" as much anger as they did by using the voting record on the health care bill. Moreover, the economy will be in much better shape than it is now. Anger against immigrants will not be as strong as it is now. Since there is no chance that a comprehensive immigration reform bill will pass in the next Congress, economy, national security, or other things that will rise as the most important tissues will dominate political discussions.

So, the assumption is meaningless.

Some people are just plain ignorant and will believe anything they see or hear on TV.
Dream Act isn't even all that controversial, the benefits outweigh the negatives if they would only actually look at the facts and not ignore them.

More troops
More college graduates
More job creation
More revenues from tax
More etc.

Interestingly, we all haven't heard anything from Reid since the last appearance on Univision 2 weeks ago. That's worrisome to me.
