White House Working the Phones to Get Votes for DREAM Act

White House administration members are on their third day of calling legislators to garner support for the DREAM Act, which will most likely be voted on this week. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to high-ranking Hispanic White House member Cecilia Munoz – they are all working the phones to argue for passing the bill that would grant immigrant students citizenship.

The bill has also garnered some unlikely support from Republicans, like former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and former Secretary of State General Colin Powell.

On Friday several University Presidents also worked the phones to call for passage of the bill. Dr. Carlos Campo, UCLA Chancellor, Dr. Gene Block, President of Miami-Dade College and Dr. Eduardo Padron were amongst them. “We’re failing to see the long-term benefits to our economy,” said Dr. Padron.
+++++++++++++++

LETS BLAZE THE PHONE LINES IN CONGRESS, AS WELL, WE HAVE TO ALL WORK VERY HARD FOR THIS

All I have to say is that if something doesn't pass next week in the senate, all the hope I had in President Obama will be lost. I've praised him countless number of times in front of my friends. They think that I worship him and the change that he's bringing to America. Along with these calls, he really needs to get up and assert himself and demand that a compromise be made.

To be fair, he is doing all he can. It's not his fault the Republicans decided to block every piece of legislation proposed.

Yeah, If he could get Health Care reform passed, I really don't see why he can't get a piece of legislation like the Dream Act across the finish line.

not true.

If he kept his campaign promise and brought up CIR in 2009, CIR will pass easily through congress. We had a window of opportunity right after the 2008 election when the president is still in the honeymoon period.

But again, guys, on the bright note, HISTORY is on our side. Since 1980s, every major piece of immigration reform passed in the lame-duck session

1986 amnesty
1994 245(i)
1996 245(i) extension
2000 Legal Immigration Family Equity (LIFE) Act & 245(i) extension again

All of the above laws passed during lame duck session. And hopefully, we could add Dream Act to the above list.

He still had health care reform to deal with, which was a much bigger deal to Americans at the time. How could he have foreseen that Republicans would pull this little stunt?

Let's just keep faith that the DREAM can still pass.
