Not that it would help us, but LMAO at King.

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- Iowa Republican and anti-illegal immigration hardliner Steve King was passed over for the leading position on the House immigration subcommittee on Friday.

Having served as ranking member on the subcommittee since 2007, King was expected to be given the chairmanship this year. Instead, Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) selected Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.), another immigration hawk with a slightly lower media profile.

Taking up the mantle of former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), King has advocated for a variety of anti-illegal immigration proposals during his time in Congress, including building an electric border fence. "It would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it," said King of the proposed fence. "We do that with livestock all the time."

King's most recent effort has been to alter the definition of citizenship so as to prevent children born to undocumented immigrants in the United States from being recognized as U.S. citizens under the 14th Amendment. On Thursday, King introduced legislation to eliminate birthright citizenship for the children he refers to as "anchor babies."

King's bill would require that children born in the U.S. have at least one parent who is already a U.S. citizen, a criteria which most legal experts say would be unconstitutional.

King told HuffPost he plans to push this year for the New IDEA Act, which would require that the IRS check the legal status on employees of businesses during audits. The bill would use E-Verify, a program used by the federal government, contractors and businesses in some states to check Social Security numbers provided by workers.

Somos Republicans, an Arizona-based Latino group, urged House Republican leaders in November to keep King out of the immigration chairman position. In a letter to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the group argued allowing King and Smith to lead on immigration would alienate Latino voters.

"Representatives Smith and King have engaged in an ill-advised platform and rhetoric that has been perceived as insensitive with their inflammatory 'immigration statements,' and this has caused an exodus of Hispanic voters to the Democratic party," the letter read.

Still, the decision to pass over King may not have much impact on immigration policy, according to advocates for comprehensive immigration reform. Gallegly and King hold similar views on immigration. Both support eliminating birthright citizenship, and have accused undocumented immigrants of taking American jobs, increasing crime and driving up health care costs.

Gallegly told The Hill he plans to hold his first hearings on the oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement worksite enforcement, and the E-Verify employment screening program.

"Steve King was dethroned because even the House Republican leadership must realize that comparing immigrants to livestock and suggesting we keep them out with an electric fence is offensive to Latino voters," Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, said in a press release. "But he's simply been demoted from king to prince, and together, with Lamar Smith and Elton Gallegly, will lead the deportation caucus in the House."

The headline made me happy but reading the article made no difference... I had hoped they would get a moderate for this position.

American incarnation of the Nazi Party. Comparing people to livestock- why am I not surprised.
Which one of these fools will grow the mustache first? Boehner would look great with such a mustache, add to it his temper...

Elton Gallegly is a recognized leader in the fight against illegal immigration. He has been named one of the “Top Ten Anti-Illegal Immigrant Hawks” in Congress and was named to the U.S. Border Control Hall of Fame.

He has used his position on the powerful Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law to successfully derail attempts to grant amnesty to those who are in this country illegally, improve interior enforcement, streamline deportation procedures, and prevent illegal immigrants from taking advantage of taxpayer benefits.

Immigration is not just an economic issue; it is a public safety and national security issue.

Elton’s commitment to eliminating illegal immigration led the then-Speaker of the House to appoint Elton to Chair the Task Force on Immigration Reform in 1995. Elton’s task force released a more than 200-page report containing more than 80 specific recommendations. More than 60% of the recommendations were signed into law the following year. One of those recommendations has evolved into E-Verify. E-Verify is an easy-to-use, accurate, computer-based, employee verification system that ensures people have a legal right to work in the United States. It’s free to employers.

Most illegal immigrants come here for jobs. The Social Security Administration (SSA) sent 11 million letters to employees whose Social Security numbers don’t match their names, so we know least 11 million illegal immigrants have jobs.

While some of discrepancies can be explained, most represent an illegal worker. And that 11 million doesn’t account for the underground cash economy.

In July, 14.6 million Americans were unemployed. It doesn’t take a mathematician to see how taking a minimum of 11 million illegal immigrants off employment rolls would increase jobs for Americans. In addition, if we take away the jobs and other incentives that invite people to break our immigration laws, most will leave of their own accord.

Currently, E-Verify is voluntary, although several states have made it mandatory. Elton is working with his congressional colleagues to make it mandatory nationally.

Identifying and deporting criminal illegal immigrants is also a top priority. Elton authored the law that established jail screening programs that enable immigration officials to identify and detain criminal immigrants before they are released on bail. The program is now in place in virtually all federal and state prisons and many local jails, including the jails in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

As a senior member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Gallegly wrote several provisions of the 9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act. Those that specifically addressed the security aspects of illegal immigration include the expansion of pre-inspection efforts at foreign airports, increasing penalties for identification fraud and for false claims of citizenship, and speeding up the full implementation of an automated entry and exit data system at U.S. ports of entry. Elton Gallegly's work has helped move the debate in our nation’s capital, and he continues to be a strong and forceful voice for immigration reform that strengthens our borders though worksite enforcement and elimination of benefits and which prohibits amnesty for illegal immigrants.

This lovely and kind individual got what he wanted signed into law by another useless Democratic president , Clinton, whose only interest was keeping businesses happy. I've read several opinion pieces from immigration lawyers that the push to make e-verify mandatory asap is underway in the House. There's a consensus that a newer Republican version of DREAM -more restrictive and with an even lower pool of qualifying people than the piece of @*#$ introduced in December- will be allowed to ride as a way to insure against a presidential veto by Obama. But I don't have any confidence in Obama. The key to any immigration reform in our favor is to take a page from their book and pass laws that can be expanded and evolved to address the issue, just like they did with IIRIRA in 1996. I think the best example of this is the version of CIR that was recently introduced in Utah. Utah! Of all places. Ha. If it passes and grants immigration status to state residents, I want to know how the right-wingers that finaced the AZ bill and its defense in the circuit court will argue against this 'state' rights issue.
