Russell Pearce, the lead sponsor of SB-1070 has been elected to be the president of the Arizona State Senate. And in order to continue with his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Pearce has proposed legislation that would deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents, basically going against the 14th amendment.
But this hate toward the immigrant and Latino community in Arizona is nothing new. In the past, Pearce has proposed legislation that would require landlords to check someone’s immigration status before renting an apartment and he has even gone as far as proposing a bill that would have prevented American citizens to marry non-American citizens (not to mention he’s good friends with JT Ready, one of Arizona’s leading neo-Nazis).
This type of hateful speech needs to stop. And if we have learned anything about the people from Arizona, in the past year, is that they know how to fight back. In 2010, Arizonians marched, rallied, and even got arrested in opposition to the hateful SB1070 law. And now, they’re standing up and fighting back again. The people of Arizona have launched a “Hold Russell Pearce Accountable” campaign with the goal of removing Russell Pearce from office. This past January 31st, a Delegation presented a petition to the Secretary of State’s office to have Senate President Russell Pearce recalled.
In order to do this, a total of 7,756 signatures to the petition must be submitted from qualified electors to the Arizona Secretary of State’s office by May 27, 2011. This is no small task, but it must be done in order to stop the hate in Arizona.
