ON THE ISSUES : IMMIGRATION
Call for reform is not likely to be answered
Passing mention acknowledges GOP priorities are economy, jobs

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama reiterated his call Tuesday for lawmakers to debate and pass comprehensive immigration reform, but his brief remarks amounted to a concession that the issue remains an uphill battle in Congress.
"I know that debate will be difficult and take time, but tonight, let's agree to make that effort," Obama said in his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress.
Obama's call for reform comes as legislatures in Texas and several other states eye Arizona-style enforcement measures to crack down on illegal immigration.
Obama said he will be "prepared to work with Republicans and Democrats to protect our borders, enforce our laws and address the millions of undocumented workers who are now living in the shadows."
He spoke in favor of the DREAM Act, blocked by Senate Republicans last year, which would provide permanent status for foreign-born immigrants who complete two years of college or military service.
"Let's stop expelling talented, responsible young people who can staff our research labs, start new businesses and further enrich this nation," Obama said.
Jobs and immigration
The president's passing mention of immigration reform came as no surprise to Republicans, who control the House of Representatives. The GOP argues improving the economy and creating jobs should come first.
Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee which oversees immigration reform, said "it's hard for him to talk about creating jobs and then endorse illegal workers keeping their jobs at the expense of American workers."
Smith and GOP leaders say they will concentrate on border security and workplace enforcement of current immigration laws before considering comprehensive reform.
Immigrant rights groups expected the president to mention immigration reform, but called on him to do more to engage Republicans on the issue.
Surge expected in 2012
Comprehensive reform and measures to provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants have become a political wedge issue expected to resurface in 2012, they said.
"We would like him to get on offense and really challenge the Republicans on comprehensive immigration reform," said Frank Sharry with America's Voice, a pro-immigrant rights group.
Sharry said the politics of Smith and other GOP members are creating a liability for Republicans "as they go into 2012 where states with large numbers of Latinos may well decide who wins the election."
Eliseo Medina, Service Employees International Union treasurer, said Obama needs to challenge Republicans "to step up to the plate - to be people who are really for solutions instead of little ideological issues that are much more about scoring political points."

Dude, don't just copy and paste every single article that has the word immigration reform in it. Take the time and effort to highlight the article's major points by making them bold. Also take the effort to correct the spacing that often goes awry when you copy stuff from one place to another on the web.
