What happens to a DREAM Act deferred? In an election year, it gets re-fought.

This week, Democrats say they will try once again to advance legislation that would give some young undocumented immigrants a chance to live legally in the U.S.*

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (or DREAM) Act would provide a road to citizenship to certain undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children. First introduced to the Senate in 2001, it was blocked in the Senate in December.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois plans to file a new DREAM Act bill on Wednesday. In the House, Rep. Howard Berman of California plans to file similar legislation.

Generally, to qualify the young immigrants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent and have spent two years in college or the military. They must have been under 16 when they arrived in the U.S.

At least one Republican, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, is co-sponsoring the House bill.

The bill filings would follow a speech Tuesday in Texas on immigration by President Barack Obama.

After the obama speech in El Paso and after the new speaker boehner said legislation didn't have a chance. I wonder what will happen with these bills...

That's the immigration speech Obama should've gave during his State of the Union. Better late than never I suppose.

Yes, he put extra emphasis on the Dream Act this time.

I disagree. The POTUS is using the political leverage he got from killing Bin Laden. The timing is right, but it's still far from a sure thing.

Imo,timing is always subjective and there are oppotunities that can come up at any moment. However, considering the current Congress the issue to me still seems to me dead until the House is under Democrat control again and preferably with a superlative number of Democrats as well.

^ Yup. We shouldn't expect it to pass, and I don't think Washington does either. But there are tons of Freshman members in this congress, and IMO, we need to get a record of how they will vote on this issue before the 2012 elections. And if it is to be reintroduced in this congress, the timing is now, because Obama's approval rating is sky high.

Let's see which moderate Republicans are willing to co-sponsor in the Senate
