Rep. Lungren blasts Obama's joke about moats and alligators for border security

Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.) on Wednesday night said he is "disappointed" that President Obama chose to mock those who are demanding tighter border security in his Tuesday speech in El Paso.

Obama angered many by ridiculing demands for beefed up border protection, at a time when law officers and citizens in southwestern states have been injured or killed by drug violence that has leaked over the border from Mexico.

"Maybe they'll need a moat," Obama said. "Maybe they want alligators in the moat. They'll never be satisfied."

"Let me register my disappointment at the demonization of those who might have a disagreement with the president that was expressed by him in his speech yesterday," Lungren said on the House floor Wednesday night.

"Talking about moats and talking about alligators and talking about intransigents on the others side of the aisle is not the way to attract bipartisan support to deal with one of the most difficult and important questions of our nation," he said.

"I wouldn't say I'm outraged. I would say I'm disappointed at the tone of those remarks of the president yesterday. If in fact we're going to work together on issues as important as that, it would seem to me to be important for us to in some way at least accept the fact that there may be legitimate reason for differences, and try and bridge those differences rather than expand them."

They're just giving us more reasons to ridicule them again and again.

I am optimistic something can happen on CIR if it contatins the border security measures that Republicans think are necessary. But, if Republicans just refuse to vote against this type of CIR, they are going to lose more latino voters.

And they know this noose is slowly closing in on their savage necks. It's only a matter of time before something regarding immigration will happen this year. (What I mean is, something actually getting passed) Both parties know that it's the only way to legitimately secure the much sought Latino votes.

Funny thing is, Obama is pretty much guaranteed the 2012 election, but Repubs know that they need to start amending things with the Latinos.

I am praying that what you say is true and indeed I have the same feeling. Any individual who slightly follows American politics can tell you how restricted Republicans are acting in this Obama presidency. Here's the deal...DA/CIR or no DA/CIR...Obama has the second term in the bag. That said, what is the best way Repubs can increase their chances at giving him a challenge? Answer is simple..Pass DA/CIR along with a border security bill because that Latino electorate will be key along with young educated voters who are mostly for immigration. This is a game of chess that Obama needs to play properly if he wants to get DA/CIR passed before 2012 election and IMO he has made a very good move during his El Paso speech mocking the Republicans.

Knowing how repubes are, I dont blame him for over it. In a way he is right. If u need them to get something done then y dont make fun of them. since incompetent obama and dems dont have the backbone to get anything passed w/o the repubes they might need to blow them unstead of making fun of them.
