Emanuel Announces ‘New Americans’ Office
Posted by Editor on July 21, 2011 in Business, Latest News | Comments Off

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - BusinessTuesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the creation of the Office of New Americans— an office dedicated to improving services and engaging Chicago’s global immigrant communities through enhanced collaboration with community organizations, educational institutions and the private sector. “Chicago’s vitality has been built on the strength of immigrant populations that have come to enjoy new freedoms and access new opportunities,” said Mayor Emanuel. “I want to make Chicago the most immigrant-friendly city in the world and the Office of New Americans will ensure every law-abiding Chicagoan has access to the resources they need to become productive members of society and contribute to our thriving global city.” To advance its mission, the Office of New Americans will forge partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, and the private sector to:

Establish a centralized language access policy for the City of Chicago that ensures access to important information about education, public safety, healthcare, and City services;
Expand opportunities for immigrant business owners and entrepreneurs;
Enhance coordination between City government and community organizations to increase access to existing city, state, and federal programs;
Support the launch of the Illinois DREAM Act to ensure Chicago’s students have access to funds to attend college;
Promote U.S. citizenship by working with community organizations and federal agencies that provide immigration and citizenship services.

I don't know but I think he has been seen as somewhat obstructionist to the obama administration on several of his key programs including his stance on immigration and many blame him in particular for causing us to miss the opportunity while the senate had a super majority democratic and democratic leaning independents in the senate.

It feels he could just become another flip-flopper and this is just an act by Rahm to get to escalate to a higher position. His election for mayor of Chicago was flooded with controversy seeing how he was in the White House running for a city which was no longer technically his home based on how much time he lived in Chicago and how much time he was away, but he owns a house in the city so they somehow allowed him to run.

This guy is a big question mark, I just don't know how committed he might be to really.... anything.

Rahm is the one who manufactured the democratic party's policy of 'No CIR until 2013/second term of Obama'. Never trust this guy.

Well let's look at it this way: The fish by his own mouth gets hooked. "El pez por su propia boca...se pezca"

Now let's just hope he doesn't pull a MCCAIN.

Exactly. I mean the democrats have no reason as to why they couldn't have passed CIR or at least the DREAM Act aside from the simple truth that they planned to use the issue again to win the 2012 elections.

Yes, which is why i hate that he is the Mayor of a city that mostly represents immigrants. Now that he knows this, he is coming up with his B.S. of i want this city to be more immigrants friendly. When it the first year, thanks in part to him, so many people had their families deported.
