Arizona's Jon Kyl is reportedly working with a group of other Republican senators, most notably Florida's Marco Rubio, on an alternative to the Dream Act.

Rather than a path to citizenship for children who are in the country illegally if they go to college or serve in the military, the Republican alternative would give them a visa that would permit them to legally live in the country, go to school and work. They could then apply for citizenship following the existing routes but wouldn't be given a special, shorter one.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid has already said he will try to defeat the effort. That would be cruel.

A sound argument can be made that a path to citizenship would be better and more appropriate for children in these circumstances. In fact, I would make it.

But a Dream Act that includes a path to citizenship isn't going to pass this Congress. That has already been proved.

With the support of Kyl and Rubio, a Dream Act that provided legal status short of citizenship would have a chance of attracting enough Republican votes for passage -- if Democrats would vote for it, even while criticizing it for being inadequate.

There is zero question that the legal status Kyl and Rubio are proposing is infinitely better for these children than the current legal limbo they are in. The Obama administration has basically said that they won't be deported. But they cannot legally live and work here. If they get a college degree, the ability to put it to work in this country is highly problematic.

Under the Kyl-Rubio alternative, the uncertainty in their lives would be gone. They could legally live, study and work in the United States.

If Democrats want to make the political point that they love Latinos more, put up the citizenship Dream Act first and make Republicans vote against it. Condemn Republicans for not wanting to include these children as full participants in our body politic.

But then vote for the thing that will remove the uncertainty in their lives that has a chance of passing. Don't hold the children hostage to make a political point.

Since this a Republican bill then the House passage seems inevitable.

It would be interesting to see which Democrats Senate vote NO this time around from the 2010 bill. What will Durbin vote?

Harry Reid knows that we want this. It's not like he thinks that this bill isn't good enough for us. He's not stupid. He will still vote no because he thinks that some Latino will vote Republican because of this compromise. He doesn't care whether this bill will save us.

On purpose, Harry Reid is putting up DA for vote only when it will get shot down. He doesn't want to help us but rather, he only wants what's good for his own political gain.

Hey Harry Reid , do you know what it feels like to live a life like us for just one day?

If you vote no, we have to live another 5 years living like this

There is one thing that is a mitigating factor here. The Democrats always cave to the Republicans and tuck in their tails if they are afraid they will look bad. They passed the Republican proposal on Health Care reform and caved to the Republicans for not one single vote. They caved on tax increases in 2010. Harry Reid would sell his own child into slavery if he thought it would make him and the Democrats look better--or not bad compared to the Republicans. If the bill is reasonable, they will look very bad for not voting for it, which I think would make it hard for them to vote no at the end of the day.

Besides the Democrats could actually win on this ploy: imagine if they passed this through the Senate, but couldn't get it through the House because of the racist, Tea Party no-vote. This actually seems to me the more likely way it would die, and, if so, it would be the Democrats who would succeed in making the Republicans look terribly bad by actually voting for the measure and proving that the Republicans are actually anti-Latino, as everybody already knows.

Stupid Reid says he will "try to defeat the effort." F**k you! That shows you have no mercy and sympathy for any of us. Rubio is much better than you, Reid. He's actually trying to get something fkin passed that'll help all/most of us.

I say we petition to Reid and the Democrats to accept this comprimise!

Please be objective about this. Political motives aside. Do you really think Reid would be working for their version of the DREAM act to pass over a compromise without your best interest at hand? This goes to show how unreasonably desperate you guys have become. First everyone hates republicans, and now democrats are to blame. Seriously we have no reason to side with either party, we can't vote. We should be on the side of the best policy which is the real DREAM act. This reporter put it exactly how it should be said democrats should present their DREAM act and hope it passes and watch the Republicans either agree or negate it again show what heir true motives are, then the democrats should allow the alternative to have a shot. We should hope for the best policy first, and if the republicans still won't give us our dreams we'll have to take what they give us. I personally don't want to settle for the visa it will be a really long time before we get our affairs in order, and for many it won't happen. Do you understand this?

Creating your own politics here will not help our cause like I have said before be non-partisan and fight for the DREAM act, fight for our dreams.
