WASHINGTON -- The next time a minority of senators find something the majority supports to be objectionable, they may be required to take the Senate floor and explain just why they object. And when they're done with that, they'll have to keep talking, and talking, and talking.

The most persistent advice that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he gets from liberals he meets across the country is as simple as it is frustrating: "Make them actually filibuster!"

We should get 60 votes anyway though.

Not quite sure. It could be used against immigrants if GOP takes over 50 seats in future.

I find it very hard to believe that Democrats will do away with the filibuster entirely. This would be a double-edge sword for them, they know they won't be in the majority forever, and if you are the minority having no filibuster is bad. I m thinking they are just going to reform it, as it make whoever filibusters a bill stand up and speak as to why they want to hold up a bill. Many Senator-elects are already on board to reform or kill it. You guys also gotta remember that to change Senate rules you only need a simple majority of 51 votes vs 60. Democrats currently have 55 seats in the senate. (Including Independents King and Sanders.)

They are already required to stand up and voice their objection to the bill. That is what a filibuster is. There is no way to reform this silly practice. Abolish it. Simple as that. If a party has the majority, it's only because the majority of the population agree with their ideas. Sometimes we may disagree with the majority, but they've earned their chance to make the rules. It's up to us to hold them accountable.

while you think they are required to stand up and voice their opinion, they don't stand up and voice their opinion right now or haven't done so. Now it will be required to stand up and voice your opinion, if they dont stand, then it moves for a vote and a simple majority will allow passage of the piece of legislation.

Let's not claim that these changes are already in place.

The Democratic Senators have to finalize their plan and make sure they have the votes to make the rules change.

I really hope they do.

In the first two years of Obama's first term, we had historic majorities in the Senate and House. If it had not been for the filibustering Republicans, cap and trade would have passed, the public option, the DREAM Act, and campaign disclosure, among many many others!

You've never heard about the concept of the Tyranny of the 50%+1? That's what getting rid of the filibuster will accomplish, after all. I'm for a filibuster where you have to stand and actually speak for some time, but none of this stupid "secret hold" crap.
