WASHINGTON — Momentum may be building granting some path to citizenship for 11 million or so undocumented immigrants.

But don’t expect Texas Sen. John Cornyn to jump on the bandwagon.

The GOP’s national self-autopsy of its electoral woes, released Monday by the party’s national chairman, argued that without embracing a path to citizenship, the party will continue to alienate Hispanics. A bipartisan Gang of 8 in the Senate is also calling for a path.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul called for some sort of legalization in a speech Tuesday to a Hispanic business group. That could provide some political cover to conservatives, though he sent mixed signals and backed away from explicitly calling for a path to citizenship.

Cornyn said Wednesday he continues to see that as premature.

“How does that solve with what’s broken with our immigration system? That’s the basic fallacy of that sort of putting-the-cart-before-the-horse” approach, he said. “I think it’s a mistake to focus on that.”

But he said, the time will eventually come.

“I have every confidence [that] if we do what we need to do in terms of border security, worksite enforcement and guest worker program, the American people will demonstrated their typical compassion in dealing with them,” he told reporters off the Senate floor this afternoon.

Cornyn and Ted Cruz (real name Rafael) will vote against any immigration bill. That much is a given. No need to worry about them.

It's not like we're not going to get married sooner or later. Give us probationary green cards at least , I bet 10.99 million of those 11 million undocumented immigrants would take any legal path regardless of pathway to citizenship or not.

Being able to work, travel, and drive legally should suffice.

Patience is key. Conditional green cards are inevitable for DACA beneficiaries by end of this summer. I just hope they provide travel authorization to ALL the other undocumented immigrants.

It is just very logical. Every Senator in the Gang of 8 will have a portion from their plan. Durbin will most definitely get all the provisions of Dream Act in the bill. Also, the rest of the GOP crowd fully support legalization in particular of Dream Act students. Prepare to become a green card holder.

Also...This CIR or whatever passes cannot drop the ball when it comes to DACA/Dreamers/Childhood Arrivals...if even the young arrivals get shafted with something like "Useless Bullshit Visa that is just like DACA but is called something else for 10 years, then able to apply for GC 5 years later, and then Citizenship 10 years later" then this whole CIR hype was a scam.

There must and most likely will be a very generous outcome for us. And I stand by the notion that we have a unconditional duty to take care of our loved ones who have given us this oppurtunity. So if our family do get cornered off of a cliff, it will be us who reach down and pull them back up saying "Don't worry, I got you! Noone is going to keep us down!"

How would it be a scam? Why do you feel like these people own you something?
