CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte high school student has been detained by federal immigration authorities after he was arrested for stealing from his job.
Now, his friends are trying to raise money to get him a lawyer in hopes he won’t be deported.
Gus Zamudio was set to graduate from Northwest School of the Arts in May, but now he’s being held at an immigration detention center in Georgia.

“He’s barely 18 and he’s in jail for being an immigrant,” Gus’ friend Mario told NBC Charlotte Sunday.
“I've cried, it's been really super hard. He scared, he's alone, and there's nothing we can do to help.”

Zamudio turned 18 just a few weeks ago. Last Sunday he was arrested for stealing from his workplace and was detained by ICE authorities.
“You don't expect for it to hit that close to home,” Gus’ friend Devyn Bauer said. “And now it has, so everybody's just kind of really shook by the whole thing.”
Zamudio’s friends say he’s supposed to be federally protected from deportation under DACA, since he entered the US from Mexico more than a decade ago, as a minor.
They believe their friend is innocent of the theft charge.
“I couldn't believe it I just sat there and I said what? He sounded so scared so nervous,” Mario explained. “That's the thing that broke my heart the most, to hear him trying to be so strong. But being completely broken.”
Mario and Devyn have started a GoFundMe to cover Gus’ legal fees, with the hope that their friend won’t be forced to leave the country.
“We're not giving up,” Mario said. “We’re going to fight for him until the end.”

If he is innocent he will be released. If he is guilty and proven guilty then he is an idiot!

If the accusations are true, he is an idiot. You cannot really work a miracle if he CHOSE to fuck up.

I hope he finds a way out but this should be a lesson to all DACA recipients that just because you have some human dignity with DACA, you are not anything close to having the same rights as Green Card holders or citizens. Keep good company and don't do anything dumb.

It's these types of cases that remind us why the good v. bad immigrants rhetoric is necessary. If he is found guilty, do you really want to find yourselves categorized in the same group of immigrants as these dudes? IF the accusations are true, it is embarrassing to even hear he has or is DACA eligible. I often find myself apologizing for shit the bad ones have done and clarifying that there are good and bad immigrants. For the young ones who come on here, wake the fuck up; do not do stupid shit. Grow up and realize what a great privilege you have under DACA and all of the help you have if you live in California. Stop being so fucking stupid.

The last few years I notice that many younger generation of dreamers seem not to give a shit because they have not gone through the hell the older dreamers went through, so they really do not seem to put a high value on DACA and what it means to many of us. Hell, I know a few cases where the parents literally had to force their DACA eligible kids to an immigration attorney to apply; the kids viewed DACA as pointless....really????

Is stealing a misdemeanor? I agree, some new DACA holders don't know the difference between DACA status and being absolutely without it.

They don't know the hell it is not to have it.

I sure hope something is fixed soon. We cannot be dependent on all of these morons commiting crimes. It is only a matter of time until some commits a truly stupid act.

It's cases like these that make it harder for the rest of us. I hope he doesn't get deported but he's an idiot.

You people are so quick to pull the trigger that you forget or don't care to use your brains. First if the kid got ICEd that means someone called them. You think an employer would call ICE on you for stealing? At the very worse they would call the cops. But most likely they would fire you. Now assuming they did call the cops and that's how he got ICEd then that's different. But whats more likely is that he was framed. Theres a lot of piece of shit people who would love to fuck up someones life if they don't like them and if they could do it while staying anonymous. Its a fucked up world people, its not all black and white like you all make it seem like. If you're going to assume, assume on our behalf. Bc we're being hunted out there and the last thing we need is our own people automatically looking for a reason to turn their back on us. Like you guys are doing to pretty much every story that breaks out of a Dreamer who got accused of something.

But yea, if he stole he's an idiot.

Yes, if he did actually commit the crime, he is an asshole. If he is being framed (which I doubt), he does not deserve to get deported.

Bingo. When you don't suffer, you don't appreciate the gift that's DACA.
