It might have seemed like there was a glimmer of hope for young undocumented immigrants on Thursday, when Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said President Donald Trump*told him he would extend a deadline for Congress to act on deportation protections for so-called “Dreamers” if lawmakers failed to do so by March 5, 2018.

The only problem: The president can’t extend a program he’s already killed.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, rescinded by the Trump administration on Sept. 5,*“is terminated in its entirety,” said Marshall Fitz, who works at*Emerson Collective, an organization that advocates for immigration reform.

“The idea that you could somehow extend it is a figment of Lankford’s imagination,” Fitz told reporters on Friday. “The harm is happening today, and it will continue up through March 5 and beyond.”
Quote:
Trump cannot simply “extend” a deadline on DACA. People are slated to lose DACA protections on a rolling basis, and the program that would allow them to renew them has been rescinded. The only way for them to prolong their protections would be for Trump to restart a program that his administration has said is unconstitutional, and for the administration to begin accepting and approving applicants quickly enough to serve those set to lose their protections on March 6 or later.

Sh** is about to hit the fan when those permits start expiring. If Democrats don't do nothing come December, my initial guess is that Congress will pass the BRIDGE act to find more time and Trump will most likely sign it to avoid any further backlash.

That's good. We don't need extension. We need permanent solution.

While I do agree, time is not on our side right now. DACA is not Congress priority right now. It seems like healthcare will be first, tax second and the Iran deal last, and if everything goes fine, which I doubt, they will tackle DACA.

Our biggest bet is December. Hopefully Democrats can get it together and force Trump so sign something.

Health Care is dead. They attempted about 5 times to repeal ACA and now Trump is just using his executive powers to demolish the law. Right now the biggest priority is Tax Reform and then its going to be Immigration (Dream Act and Border Security/Enforcement related mostly). It does seem like December is going to be a huge month. I really don't know all the rules of how Dems can attach DA to bills but seems like something is going on in December.

Healthcare is dead? Yeah...try telling that to Congress, who by the way has made it clear that they will go at it again after Tax reform. Trump using his executive orders on healthcare is to put more pressure on Congress to act, it was not to say "hey I killed it let's move on now".

The efforts of "repeal and replace" will never be successful and there's not going to be another legislative attempt at it until after 2020. Trump wants to use the issue as a campaign issue for 2020. Believe me. It's a complete disaster for Republicans. They have failed miserably. Trump just stabbed the existing law unbelievably yesterday. He immediately stopped the CSR payments and that is going to make this law EXPLODE. Like seriously we are in major trouble. Trump does not want a law to pass. Trust me on that one. He wants to deliberately make the law fail so that he can say "Look Obamacare is exploding, now vote for me in 2020!" Dirty dirty businessman.

WH confirms Pres golfing again today with @LindseyGrahamSC. A rare confirmation. Most often, WH refuses to. Via @markknoller

My god I hope Lindsay Graham is vouching for us hard.

I doubt he will want Obamacare to fail and drag onto 2018. This could cost them big time politically since they have been "repealing and replacing" for 7 years now. I think he's latest setback on Obamacare was to put pressure on Congress to act. But I don't see them acting on DACA before Obamacare. Even Graham is against that. December for sure will be a month to remember and will be our biggest bet.
