President Donald Trump on Thursday cautioned against labeling young undocumented immigrants protected under DACA as “Dreamers,” warning people not to “fall into that trap.”

The president, addressing lawmakers at a Republican retreat in West Virginia, called for a resolution to the ongoing congressional impasse over immigration policy, which has stalled as Republican and Democratic officials have failed to reach a compromise over the Obama-era immigration initiative.

But Trump, who in September rescinded DACA, spoke out against the term for the group of roughly 800,000 immigrants.

“Some people call it Dreamers,” Trump said. “It's not Dreamers. Don’t fall into that trap. It’s much different than dreamers.”

The president took aim at the label earlier this week during his State of the Union address, in which he said that “Americans are dreamers, too.”

Trump echoed his remarks in West Virginia on Thursday.

“I said the other night, we have dreamers, too,” he said. “We have dreamers in this country, too. We can’t forget our dreamers. I have a lot of dreamers here.”

Trump’s remarks on immigration during the address to Congress drew the ire of Democratic lawmakers, many of whom invited Dreamers to attend the speech as their guests in a sign of support.

Trump told reporters last week that he would consider offering a pathway to citizenship in 10 to 12 years for enrollees of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, signaling a major concession in immigration talks from the White House.

But Trump signaled that he would also request billions in funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with other security measures, as part of the negotiation. Democratic lawmakers have balked at the offer.

Okay after seeing this type of language, it is clear to me that the president doesn't genuinely want to help us. Now he is trying to make it seem like somehow we are undeserving of the term dreamers.

The word Dreamer finally has meaning and power and he wants to dilute it and take it away from us. It has taken over 10 years to finally add that to the lexicon of the country and to be able explain our situation with one word and all of a sudden he comes along and wants to end that. We shouldn't let that happen and we have to say Dreamer and Dream Act every chance we get it to have a unified message.

Trump as a businessman knows the power of branding or he wouldn't put his name on everything he's touched so we should do the same.

This is why nothing gets done. Hung up on uselessness.

Maybe if... you know, some kind of relief was passed we woudn't need a label.

Dreamers is our word. He cannot use that word anymore. His mouth is too filthy to say such a pure word.

He’s trying to shift the meaning of Dreamers. I don’t think it will happen. It is well known when Dreamers are mentioned, it is in referenced to the 700k DACA recipients.

Honestly, this low. Hopefully Trump gets a special place in hell along with his cabinet.
