I just recieved word that at a local California Campus (Santa Ana College to be exact), a group of people are collecting people's used pens to send to our Governor (sorry, I can't spell his name...not going to try. lol) to urge him to sign the Dream Act!

This is great! Does anyone know about this? I'm highly supporting it on my page (link down in signature) and urging all to join in on this.

Doesn't seem like much, but it definitely is something. There are also flyers being passed out.

I just heard from someone who was at the campus and I'll be attending there in the Fall, so it seems like alot of people are in on this!!

Not in a dashing hopes kind of way, but more correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the DREAM Act need to be a federal law for it to have any effect? States can't pass immigration law... so a governor couldn't sign the DREAM Act, but could use political influence to endorse its signing.

nah they are talking about California Dream Act, it would give financial aids to california dreamers but not legalize them, that would have to be federal, you are right. I hope it pass, if it passes I could actually quit my job? lol or go for bachelors

See, this is what confuses me.

If this CA Dream Act passes (which would be amazing btw), wouldn't that in a way be bad for the dreamers? Look at it this way...

If an "illegal" citizen (I don't like using the term illegal) applies for the financial aid, then they give it to them because of the CA Dream Act, that means the government would then know that they're "illegal". Isn't that a position they don't want to be in?

Or would they change the application process where they won't be able to differenciate (sp?) between who's a full citizen and who's not....for protection?

I dont' know, again, I'm confused.

Yeah but state privacy laws extend to educational records too. An application for aid under the CA DREAM Act would be considered as confidential educational records which can't be shared with outside third parties such as federal agencies.

And state agencies don't have the authority to initiate immigration enforcement actions. Such action is strictly restricted to the federal government. In 2006, a junior Senator in the New Mexico State Senate proposed a bill to have the state police and the sherriff's departments of border cities patrol the state's southern border with Mexico. He got really excited about it too till he got a letter from DHS stating that it was illegal and unconstitutional for state law enforcement to conduct border patrols, which is a federal function.

Besides, I'm sure there would be thousands of applicants under the CA DREAM Act. You really think that the state government will expend time and resources to give this information to federal agencies?? The states know, better than anyone else, how slow and bureaucratic the federal government is and that you can't depend on any federal agency for any meaningful action...unless of course it has to do with money.

There is no other agency that works faster than the IRS when it finds out that someone has withheld paying taxes.

Unfortunately, with the budget crisis CA is in, I think this is very unlikely.
People are already very angry about the cuts to basic K-12 public education (and they are some big cuts), so this is probably not the best time politically to try and press for extending benefits to non-authorized residents.

We had to pay a $100 "supply fee" at the beginning of the school year for my daughter....she attends a K-8 public school in CA, and I fear it's only going to get worse. People are completely unrealistic about spending and the explosion of entitlement programs in CA -- it's unsustainable.

Personally, I am glad that we will be leaving CA soon -- I am worried about that state -- people are just NOT realistic about what is reasonable or affordable.

that might be true, we are in a huge deficit, and I don't know much but I don't see how terminator has fixed anything... I knew anyone trying to fill gray Davis' shoe wasn't going to have fun after all.

It really depends on where you live too, I live in bay area, rich Asian neighborhood where lots of the housing tax goes to schools, our schools are pretty dang rich.

But with that being said... it's the best darn state there is. Mainly cause of the weather
