Rotor.com has given an immigration update concerning the Chairwoman of Immigration sub-committee,Zoe Lofgren.
Quote:
The chairwoman of the House Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-California) has said presidential leadership will be needed to pass any significant immigration reform this year.

Lofgren supports measures that would make it easier for highly educated immigrants, particularly those with advanced degrees in the sciences, to remain in the United States. She declined during a speaking engagement in Washington D.C. to offer any details as to when legislation might be unveiled, but did note that most immigration proposals would be difficult insofar as winning Republican support.
I wonder why she would interested in Republican support in the House if they have such vast majorities ?The Democrats need to stop stonewalling & start writing a bill.

Well to me it seems like they aren't necessarily trying to deviate from writing a bill, but just figuring out how to get more people on their side. Plus, what difference would it make if they start making a bill knowing that there isn't a way to pass with without the support of some republicans?

I can write the bill my self...but that doesn't mean it'll pass.

^ Yeah, I think Rep. Lofgren was saying that any immigration bill will have a hard time getting Republican votes not that they are waiting for Republican votes although I'm sure she would welcome it.

Well,Senator Reid believed he had the numbers earlier in this Congressional cycle, what has changed since then ?

We have a Congress & President who have political capital to spare plus at least 4-5 Republican Senators who support some sort of legalization program. If the Senate is difficult potentially, then why not just start in the House where the Democrats have more than enough majorities to pass or start anything they want,& even to pressure some of their moderate or conservative colleagues in the Senate ?

I also find it interesting in asking why would they try later in this congressional cycle when the economy is projected to become worse, where is the incentive ?

My point is specific to the House though, why would she be interested in what House Republicans think when they have more than enough numbers in the House ?

The article didn't say she was interested in the House Republicans. Rep. Lofgren said that immigration proposals have a hard time gaining Republican support. In other words, she was just stating a basic political reality.

If there is no interest in Republicans why mention them at all ? political reality or not it doesn't stop them from bringing any immigration bill through the relevant House committees & to the floor for a vote.

^ I think you're reading too much into the sentence. Again, if you read the portion:

Quote:
but did note that most immigration proposals would be difficult insofar as winning Republican support.
Rep. Lofgren was talking about more visas for educated immigrants but cautioned that many immigration proposals won't get much Republican support.
