I actually have service with AT&T wireless. To get their service I just went in to a store and asked to open a new account. They asked me for a ssn but I gave them my itin. They did a credit check, asked for an ID and that was it.

Some companies let you use your ITIN, I don't know what part of the country you live in but there's regional carriers such as Metro PCS in Florida and they don't require contracts, and it's even cheaper than other companies because you get unlimited text and minutes for a flat rate.

I would also advice you not to sign a contract unless you are 100% sure you can afford it, don't be like me, these damn contracts and bills have ruined my life and I'm only 19.

You can get the tmobile prepaid which is pretty nice... I think same price as the contract without the contract.

Re: How to get a cellphone?

Depends the company. Like frbc13 said, in FL, Metro PCS doesn't ask for a SS. In Nevada, Embarq lets you use your ITIN, but they ask for a down payment.

Question...

How do you make credit with your ITIN??...

^^ With a credit card of course.

Re: How to get a cellphone?

But isn't a SS required to get a credit card? (excuse my ignorance)

someone knowledgeable correct me on this (rahman or ianus or nick), but in the event that we qualify for a ssn, like with the passage of DREAM, would the history of our itin transfer to this new ssn. or is it like a blank slate.

thanks in advance and sorry for hijacking your thread

Yes, it would most definitely transfer over.

Ha!...I wish a was a full-time student!...I would if I didn't have to pay $1000/class.

I was looking and there are some prepaid credit cards that some banks offer, I don't know if I'll be able to apply for those tho. And of course, I wouldn't buy something I can't afford!

Thanks for all the info!

I have a consular ID card. If you're Mexican, you can easily get one, in my state at least.

well the most important benefit is being able to pay your taxes and establishing that finicky little thing called "good moral character." people are getting unnecessarily worried about tattoos. what they should be worried about is putting themselves in the best possible light when it comes time to prove that we are good kids. to be blunt, we have to show this in the language of washington ... money. specifically, paid taxes.

secondly, another benefit is a bank account. with proper id, you can open a bank account with some banks with an itin.

thirdly, you may qualify for a credit card. thereby building your credit history.

Paying your taxes, while being a very important aspect of everyday life, will not be the sole reason that establishes our good moral character. I don't think it will even be one of the top issues since the DREAM Act is for kids/students who for the most part have never held a job, paid or unpaid. They are going to look mostly at criminal history to determine if we are morally sound.

That being said, the ITIN is very useful and like Dreamhippie said can help you open up a bank account and get credit cards or even a cell phone. I have also used it on college apps in the SSN box. (Just remember the ITIN is NOT the same as a SSN).

And for those of you who were talking about ID's, many of us have gotten new passports that were used in addition to the ITIN to open accounts, etc. Search the forum for info on how to obtain a passport.

We've had Sprint PCS for the longest time.
Just a passport #, I think.

I'm not sure what they asked for originally, but ssn wasn't necessary.

Re: How to get a cellphone?

I've had Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and currently am with MetroPCS, and believe me Metro is the easiest since it does not require a contract, and you pay month to month. with Sprint and At&T I just showed them my Mexican Consular ID and my ITIN. With Verizon I used my friend's info, and with Metro I just bought the phone and had service the same day, albeit the quality isn't up to par with Verizon it is adequate.

Re: How to get a cellphone?

a lot of the bigger cities will offer plans, w/o the need of an ssn. some will even offer no contracts, ive seen a t-mobile dealer, who offered both of that, and it was still a plan type of thing, and not t-mobile prepaid. a lof of ppl are saying metro pcs, either that or virgin mobile, cuz they both have plan types but no contract and no credit check. really depends on where you're living as well. some networks are better depending on what city

I sure do. I've had a credit card for some time now, I got it to establish credit. They didn't require me to put down a deposit, but they did tell me that had I not had established credit I would have had to put down a deposit.

I closed my account with T-Mobile last week because it was a joint account and wanted one of my own. They gave me FlexPay month-to-month, and got my new account over the phone. All they asked for was my debit card, and my ITIN instead of SSN. All smooth.
