1 vote.

So I've been playing around with some numbers and it seems to me that provided nothing major happens, like someone getting caught with a 'wide stance' (knock on wood) we would be one vote away from passing the DA.

Here's how I figure:

Members who voted yea and are still with us (44):

Akaka (D-HI)
Bayh (D-IN)
Bennett (R-UT)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Brown (D-OH)
Brownback (R-KS)
Cantwell (D-WA)
Cardin (D-MD)
Carper (D-DE)
Casey (D-PA)
Collins (R-ME)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Harkin (D-IA)
Hatch (R-UT)
Hutchison (R-TX)
Inouye (D-HI)
Johnson (D-SD)
Kerry (D-MA)
Klobuchar (D-MN)
Kohl (D-WI)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Leahy (D-VT)
Levin (D-MI)
Lieberman (ID-CT)
Lincoln (D-AR)
Lugar (R-IN)
Martinez (R-FL)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Murray (D-WA)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Sanders (I-VT)
Schumer (D-NY)
Snowe (R-ME)
Stabenow (D-MI)
Webb (D-VA)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Wyden (D-OR)

Members who voted yea but are now gone ( 8 ):

Biden (D-DE)
Clinton (D-NY)
Coleman (R-MN)
Craig (R-ID)
Hagel (R-NE)
Lott (R-MS)
Obama (D-IL)
Salazar (D-CO)

Members who didn't vote, but would vote yea this time around (15):

Udall (D-CO)
Udall (D-NM)
Warner (D-VA)
Shaheen (D-NH)
Hagan (D-NC)
Merkley (D-OR)
Begich (D-AK)
Burris (D-IL)
Kaufman (D-DE)
Bennet (D-CO)
Franken (D-MN)
Gillibrand (D-NY)
Boxer (D-CA)
Dodd (D-CT)
Kennedy (D-MA)

So that's 52-8+15= 59 which means that we'd only need one more senator to vote yea.

I guess that vote could come from Landrieu, McCaskill, McCain, Specter, Graham, Baucus or Sessions (hahaha just kidding)

What do you think?

I think McCain might vote for us...

but how sure are you about that 59 vote? That sounds pretty darn good...

Kinda too close for comfort.

Re: 1 vote.

I'm pretty sure. None of the new senators campaigned on an anti-immigrant platform and as for the other 3 who didn't vote last time it was because they weren't in town.

Re: 1 vote.

Also, I just read on another thread that Landrieu is now part of the senate hispanic taskforce so that should really help.

Oh and McCaskill is now a co-sponsor of the CIR bill if I remember correctly.

I"m sure gregg stated that he would've rejected the position, had it affected the balance of power in the senate.

I doubt it. He would have more power as a Secretary and power is the main reason why these people become politicians in the first place.

I'm not "assuming" anything. I doubt that Boxer and Kennedy will vote against us given their support for immigration reform. As for the new senators even the ones from the most conservative states (Hagan) are pro-immigrant.

Oh and by the way I never said that ALL dems would vote for it. Mark Pryor, Byron Dorgan, Robert Byrd, Jon Tester, and Kent Conrad might as well turn Republican because they're absolutely useless to us. The only dems who might change their positions are Landrieu, McCaskill, and Baucus like I said before.

Hagan is iffy though, we might have to call her office and find out what her stance on the issue is.

Kay Hagan

In Favor of

- Strengthening the borders

- Enforcing and upgrading laws that prosecute employers who knowingly hire illegal workers

- Protecting American workers’ jobs

- Setting national security against illegal immigration

Against

- Amnesty for children of illegal immigrants, including legislation similar to the DREAM Act

- Providing incentives for immigrants to be in the U.S. illegally

- Giving preference to Latino students over others (affirmative action)

Basically, all the politicians from N.C are assholes when it comes to this issue.

Exactly. They made an agreement that the seat would go to another Republican.

Re: 1 vote.

Yea, from what I understand Hagan has only said she would support a guest worker program.

"If North Carolina’s farmers and seasonal businesses are having trouble finding the help they need, Kay would support the reform of guest-worker programs to ensure farmers and businesses are able to meet their needs legally and stay competitive while protecting American workers’ jobs."

About the "1 vote" issue, I wouldn't base votes on what happened in the previous congress because things change. I would say we have a least 42 senators, those in the Hispanic task force, that vote for cloture if a filibuster is brought against the DA. I doubt Hagan would vote for the DA, maybe for cloture.

About Gregg's seat, his replacement is Bonnie Newman. The is a good chance she would support the DA.

A better way to make a list is to call each senator, and ask for their position.

Wtf does this have to do with illegal immigration? The vast majority of Latino students are not here illegally. In fact, the vast majority of them don't even have undocumented parents. Also, not all undocumented immigrants are Latino.

If she really wants to spout off about affirmative action and please the AWM crowd, she should move it to her education issues section and replace "Latino" with something much broader.

She doesn't even make the attempt to link that statement to immigration. She figures her audience will "get it." Certain politicians have always found a way to benefit from nativism (racism as well), since before this country was founded all the way up to the present.
