Biden: Senate filibuster change on debt a ‘real possibility’

Quote:

To get around Republican obstruction, President Joe Biden said Tuesday that Democrats are considering a change to the Senate’s filibuster rules in order to quickly approve lifting the nation’s debt limit and avoid what would be a devastating credit default.

The president’s surprise remarks come as the Senate is tangled in a fiscally dangerous standoff over a vote that’s needed to suspend the nation’s debt limit and allow the federal government to continue borrowing to pay down its balances. Congress has just days to act before the Oct. 18 deadline when the Treasury Department has warned it will run short of funds to handle the nation’s already accrued debt load.

...

The topic was broached during a private Democratic Senate lunch session Tuesday as senators were growing exasperated with Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s refusal to allow a simple vote on the debt limit. Instead, McConnell is forcing Democrats to undertake what they view as a cumbersome process taking days, if not weeks, that will eat into their agenda.

With Republicans putting up hurdles to the vote, Democratic senators have been discussing a range of options — including a carve-out to the chamber’s filibuster rules.

But invoking a filibuster rules change seems highly unlikely, in part because all Democratic senators would need to be on board.

At this point no one should care about this bill considering the fact that we are on the back burner again.

Agreed. I don't care anymore. We're not getting anything out of this so why care about it?

I'm done with following Politics for awhile. This sh*t is nuking my mental health.

Gotta agree. Looks like we are effectively squeezed out of reconciliation. Might as well cheer for sinema and manchin to doom the whole ship. We probably won’t get shit in benefits but end up contributing in higher taxes

Removing the filibuster means any bill only requires 50 votes to pass. That includes immigration and does not need to be in reconciliation where it has to follow the Byrd rule.

The problem is that they’re considering a carve out in the filibuster for the debt ceiling. Everything else subject to 60 votes

I would say higher chances of reconciliation passing as it is rather than democrats ending filibuster. These kinda news is just for giggles

eh...not that easy. Joe's kind of calling turtle's bluff. The carveout would obviously be for the debt ceiling and nothing else, and neither Manchin nor Sinema would have a reason to oppose it unless they just want to blatantly say "I am w/the GOP and will not help in ruining turtle's plan".

Smart move by the turtle. Dems will blink and carve out filibuster for debt limit, and few years down the line GOP will use this as an excuse to get rid of the entire filibuster next time they have power and accomplish their priorities including getting rid of us. I hate the lying, incompetent, and corrupt Dems.
