It probably depends on your state's laws. I live in Texas and I'm 99% certain you need your physical EAD to renew your driver's license. I'm in the same boat, too. My DL/EAD expire this Thursday, and...

The link above states that Nebraska was processing October 16th, 2014 filings as of January 31st, 2015.
