I am currently thinking: what does this mean for the Dream Act?

Sen. Specter already supports the Dream Act but voted against it because he wants the Dream Act to be part of a comprehensive bill. He was and is a solid supporter of comprehensive immigration reform, but in the event a Dream stand alone bill shows up, he's a person that can be persuaded to vote for it since he already agrees with the merits of the bill.

At the press conference today, he said that he switched parties because he didn't want to lose his seat without accomplishing a number of things he is very passionate about. His laundry list that followed included immigration.

Having said that, I think that the implications of today's news go far beyond his position on the DA. Remember, we pretty much already have the votes. The problem is that any immigration talk won't come up unless things like healthcare and energy reform are taken care of. This is where I suspect today's announcement benefits us the most. He says that he's against reconciliation so he'll probably do everything he can to avoid it (i.e. vote for cloture), making it more likely for immigration to be tackled this year.

At least hes honest about why he's switching, because he wants to keep his seat. Thats nothing but a plus for us and our cause.

From what i have heard on both CNN and Fox news, specter no longer supported the republican party but at the same time, it is a move to get re-elected, he was thinking of running as an independent i think, but decided to be a democrat. either way im glad he's fo dream, but i think he should vote for dream as a stand alone, having it with CIR is going to be much harder to pass.

That is not necessarily true. There are a number of freshmen dems and republicans who will vote for dream if it's part of a CIR bill. I honestly think CIR has more potential votes than the dream act right now.
