Hey let's say the dean act does pass, can I get a drivers lincense before the mandatory six year waiting period for residency? Also could I travel outside the united states as soon as the dream act is enforced for us?

To my understanding, if you qualify you would get "conditional permanent resident status" and yes you will have a SSN, be able to work legally, go to school and travel out of the US as long as it is not for a period of six months. You cannot go immediately to the Department of Public Safety and apply for one as soon as the law is enacted, you need to apply for conditional permanent residency first of course.

Same for me, once I would finish my education take a few months off and go back to see relatives, friends that have not seen for a very long time.

I just hope everyone here knows there are travel restrictions in place with the Dream act.I'd be careful traveling on conditional residency for any extended period of time outside the country. It can be seen as abandoning one's residency.I believe a Dream applicant cannot be out of the country for no more than a maximum of 1 year during the entire 6 year conditional residency period.
Quote:
(C) The alien has not abandoned the alien's residence in the United States. The Secretary shall presume that the alien has abandoned such residence if the alien is absent from the United States for more than 365 days, in the aggregate, during the period of conditional residence, unless the alien demonstrates that alien has not abandoned the alien's residence.
It is also interesting to note that those who have gained Conditional residency,SSN & arrived sometime before a certain time in 1996 should also know what other Federal programs they may apply for should the Dream act pass & residency is granted.
