He said Kennedy laid the groundwork, but failed because "the mood got a little sour," especially with the House GOP.

Times have now changed, Schumer said, and passing a bill is possible by separating illegal from legal immigrants with what he calls the linchpin: a biometric Social Security card that includes digital records of personal characteristics.

Schumer brings a very different political reputation to the battle than Kennedy's, one that is less liberal and ideological, and more political.

I wonder why the article states --again,when it was Kennedy who held the gavel for the immigration sub-committee in the last Congressional session.It was also well known that both Democrats agreed on different approaches during the last debate.Kennedy was willing to compromise even if it meant disagreement within his own party,but Schumer seems to be a much more hard-line Democrat judging from the 2006 debate.

Regardless,this year is becoming interesting on how this debate will unfold.

Sen. McCain has a bad temper that leads him to say inartful things especially in high pressure situations like the immigration fight and his Presidential campaign.

I'm glad the restrictionists are underestimating Sen. Schumer. Sen. Kennedy's legislative skills are legendary, but Sen. Schumer's has his own special skills as well.
