I know that there is a lot we can't do, but can we get on an airplane? from oakland to LA? what ID should we use? I really wanted a vacation with my friend. I had never travel out of town unless someone drove me there.

No valid driver's license = No plane

Even if you have one, you could still be subject to the random interrogation where they just pull you off the line.

In my opinion, a "vacation" does not qualify as a necessary trip. I would avoid it until you have papers.

Use only official state ID/DL. If you don't have one don't fly.

I'm not sure if laws have changed a lot in 3 years, but I have traveled by plane without any issues at all. Like I have my ID from when I first got here (I was 9) and it's been long expired and my passport with a valid visa and my family and I never got into any sort of trouble. I've flied 6 times with no issues and my dad 8.

Do some research though, I'd hate to get you in trouble in case my trips were just luck

^They ARE luck. You're playing with fire.

Run a quick search on here to see the consequences.

I think you can according to the TSA ID requirements for traveling on a plane (see the bold part):

Quote:
Effective June 21, 2008, adult passengers (18 and over) are required to show a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID that contains the following: name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature in order to be allowed to go through the checkpoint and onto their flight.

Passengers who do not or cannot present an acceptable ID will have to provide information to the Transportation Security Officer performing Travel Document Checking duties in order to verify their identity. Passengers who are cleared through this process may be subject to additional screening. Passengers whose identity cannot be verified by TSA may not be allowed to go through the checkpoint or onto an airplane.
Acceptable IDs include:
Acceptable Documents

  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS "Trusted Traveler" cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents)
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Border Crossing Card
  • DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
  • Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) that meets REAL ID benchmarks (All states are currently in compliance)
  • A Native American Tribal Photo ID
  • An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
  • A foreign government-issued passport***
  • Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Non-US/Canadian citizens are not required to carry their passports if they have documents issued by the U.S. government such as Permanent Resident Cards. Those who do not should be carrying their passports while visiting the U.S.

This standardization of the list of accepted documents better aligns TSA with other DHS components, including Customs and Border Protection, and REAL ID benchmarks.

***If you have a foreign passport, it is VERY risky to travel with an expired visa... we do not recommend anyone doing this.

The only security ID check at the airport is a 5-10 second stop. That's it.

Between you and me, I will say SF to LA and stay away from Oakland TSA.

I travel a lot for conferences and workshops, too much in fact. In the past 3 months, have made around 10 trips on my passport. Contrary to what people might say (especially ones who never travel), the airplane is safer than Greyhound and Amtrak.

If you have a valid passport, really consider whether you have some characteristics that could have you racially (nationally) profiled or whether people would love to see your passport and waive you right through. The military ID is fine.

I travel quite frequently in the US and I've never had a problem. I just use my foreign passport. I don't recommend that you use an expired passport-- they make you go through the additional security check.

I'm not sure how it is for other countries, but I was able to get my passport re-issued (I had lost the one I came in with when I was 4) through the Korean consulate. It's also easy to get it renewed...
