Rep. Ken Calvert called it a "tragic situation" involving people who had been brought here "illegally to no fault of their own," in a written statement.

However, he said, he would vote against the measure.
"My first priority must be to American citizens and legal residents," he added.

Jesus Christ, these people need to get acquainted with at least some version of the bill before they make statements like these. We would only be eligible for student-loans, work-study and in-state tuition.

a)student loans: umm what? how is this taxpayer-funded eduction? Is my "legal" neighbor going to pay off my loan for me?

b)work-study: "Federal Work Study funding is given to institutions to provide part-time work opportunities for students involved in certain majors. Federal funding is made to participating institutions based on requests made by the institutions." Hey guys, just so you know, we would still have to work, unless in your mind slavery is the way to go.

c) in-state tuition: First of all, this only refers to public universities. Second of all, a lot of states already have it. Third, obviously me going and paying in-state tuition is better than me not going to college at all. And finally, the biggest reason we even need in-state tuition is because we cannot find a good enough job without papers that could cover the costs of out-of-state tuition.

These politicians....Jeez

I just don't get it.

He's a Republican for Irvine, CA. Would he really vote for the DA if we weren't in an economic recession?

WTH,85% of the current votes are against Dream act in that poll.Certainly we can do better than that.

I wouldn't take what they say seriously. Look at the co-sponsors and the potential votes. The OC Register is a right-wing paper anyway.

After 2001 it was because of the War on "terrorism". Now it's the economy. Of course the Dream Act isn't going to look appealing to most. Is it supposed to look appealing? When will the "timing" be right?
