Secretary Janet Napolitano today mentioned that an immigration bill could ultimately get through Congress.I think she also mentioned Dream act,but I'm not sure.
Quote:
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said today she was optimistic that bipartisan immigration reform would, at some point, get through Congress.

“This is not a new issue,” she said in a meeting with the editorial board of The Dallas Morning News. “It’s just putting together a comprehensive package that covers the immigration issues from A to Z. ... It’s a priority for both me and the president.”

Napolitano was in Dallas to address a convention of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

She said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, would do the heavy lifting for an immigration bill in the Senate, where the process would start.

And she expressed hope that the effort, which last year was derailed in Congress, would not be as contentious as it was under former President George W. Bush
.

She did not say when a bill would ultimately be considered. At present, Congress and the White House are consumed with health care reform. So, she said, changes to the national immigration policy are probably down the road -- though she has had met with Schumer on the issue.

“There is a bipartisan recognition that the current law is outdated and needs to be brought up to date with our current needs,” she said
.

Napolitano, a former governor of Arizona, has dealt with the effects of illegal immigration for much of her career in public service.

She said an immigration bill should focus on:

-- Developing or bolstering the penalty structure for employers who repeatedly hire illegal immigrants.

-- Stamping out new tactics that human traffickers and money launderers are using to exploit the border.

-- Developing programs that would allow seasonal workers to legally enter the country.

-- Updating the visa process to allow students with so-called "intellectual capital" to remain in the country.

Napolitano said there must to be a way to deal with illegal immigrants in the country and their desire for citizenship, including having them to pay fines and taxes, and ensuring that citizenship is not extended to those with criminal records.

“Nobody is in favor of amnesty,” she said. “I’ve been dealing with this immigration issues for a long time. We need a law that needs to be updated.”

Napolitano said she is already working within existing laws to deter employers from hiring illegal immigrants.

“A lot of the illegal immigration in our country is economically motivated,” she said. “There are employers who consistently and intentionally evade our immigration laws, so they’re helping create that demand.”

In other related news dealing with "at some point", the sun will explode "at some point."

The problem is not "at some point," the problem is that we need something done ASAP.

"At some point" huh? Can they get anymore vague? Why do they keep talking about "doing" it anyway when obviously they feel they have bigger fish to fry right now?
I'm starting to wonder if they keep talking about it to pacify CIR advocates in hopes they wont feel the backlash of not doing anything when the house and senate elections come up next year. Just a thought!

Yes, those words "At Some Point" just keep adding to the mystery of when they actually plan on acting on the issue of immigration. However, I'm feeling positive that everything will eventually get started. It's just a matter of time that Congress returns from its recess and passes this Health Care bill. I definitely think Schumer will introduce the Immigration bill around Labor day as he promised...lets hope for the best after that and see how it goes!!

Hahahahahahaha. Exactly my point. People did not vote for "at some point". There are 3 years left in the currently administration; 7 if Obama seeks reelection. At which point, does "some point" materializes? My immediate relatives who are citizens will not vote for Obama again, if CIR isn't passed soon. That was the reason they voted for him and the rest of the Democrats, and they need to be held accountable.

I think we just need to chill out for some time because everything is on track. I understand that many of us have been waiting for years and years. It is completely normal to be extremely frustrated. If you think about it with a calm mind, President Obama has accomplished SO MUCH in just 8 MONTHS. He was successful in passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which also resulted in heated debates like the current one on Health Care. In addition to this, President Obama has shown a total reversal of American foreign policy by actually speaking to the Muslim world and extending a hand. This was a very important gesture that ushered in an era of peace and respectful exchange with the Muslim world. This is a huge feat considering President Bush's administration focused solely on war and isolating the Muslim world. In short, the point is that President Obama seems determined to actually sit down and work towards everything he promised during his campaign. Some people have been arguing that he is overexposed in the media. I find absolutely no problem with this...He is suppose to be on TV everyday. After all, he is the President of this country and that is his job. In these 8 months, Obama has accomplished more than Bush did in his entire two terms. I was frustrated myself when Obama mentioned that he might have to push CIR legislation to 2010 because his "plate is full" at the moment. However, after thinking about this, I can totally understand because the proof is right before my eyes. This Health Care debate has reached its climax. It will DEFINITELY pass the full Senate and House and President Obama will DEFINITELY sign it this year. I am very hopeful that Schumer will step forward with a CIR bill by labor day as he promised and this will kick off yet another contentious issue for Congress. Finally, the future of CIR hasn't been any brighter considering the passage of major bills such as the Economic stimulus package and the Health Care bill. This is what he meant when he said CHANGE is on its way. The time has come!!!
