Just wondering if those of you who found jobs can share how you got your jobs and any general tips you have to share. If privacy is a concern, than just pm me. (please don't be vague and say look around)

Also very interested in online jobs as someone on here 'millionaire'? said he makes money from selling things online.

Since many are independent, I would like to know how you get by and any tips you can share thx. I live in NY metro area if that matters.

This is a good idea.
I live in SoCal, so job tips are highly appreciated, too.

seriously you have to go around your town and talk to job owners and explain to them why you need a job and basically tell them you'll be a hard worker, you'll be a great asset and what this job would mean to you and your family. don't stay in your house hoping they're going to call you. may i suggest restaurants,local pizza shop. the money is amazing. all i ever had to show was my SSS and an id to work. heres a trick, tell them your parents are sick and you have to take care of them and your siblings ( IT ALWAYS WORK!!!)..good luck, hope you find a job real soon

I did some independent online jobs a few years back and it's not as easy as it seems. Most of it has something to do with selling products for a certain company online and gaining your audience to get paid--if no one buys from your site, then you earn zero. If you're good with marketing and advertising, then go ahead and give it a try.

Having friends helps a lot. I got my current job through a friend of a friend. She asked my friend if anyone he knew needed a job, and my friend knew I did, so he told her that.

You have to have common sense in knowing where to apply and where not to apply.

What are you starting with?

Do you have a SS#? Any experience in any field? You didn't mention anything about yourself but if you are an average college student with some humanities degree you are in a tough spot and your last chance is retail. Try to look for some deli/pizza place/bar in your area and ask if they are hiring or at least leave your name and number and tell them to contact you if they ever need anyone. If you have a SS# though it is a different story.

EDIT: just read the post above mine and realize on the last line he mentions craigslist. Didn't mean to seem like taking your idea. So instead, consider this in expansion of what was said in the post above by Gr0wTesK.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've not noticed this in any of the topics, and so maybe it has been overlooked: Craigslist.
Do you have any skills? I personal do: Computer Repair, PSP hacking, Car repair and maintenance, computer repair and maintenance, car audio installation, and independant construction (storm doors, doors, windows).
I broadcast my services on Craigslist (www.craigslist.com) all the time, and almost always get a few bites. With no overhead (like a regular company) I can make an EXTREMLY good profit, while the customer saves money. I know not many people have that MUCH of a majority of skills, but in truth, the only ones I advertise right now are: Mechanic work and car audio systems. When I advertised my other skills, I could have stayed busy 9-5, 7 days a week.
For example: Simple radio install I charge 20$. Shop charges 60-90$. Takes one hour completion (some 15 minutes....some a little longer). Take 5 jobs in a day... that's 100$ for 5 hours. 100$/5hrs = 20$ an hour. 100$day*5days = 500$ workweek. 5 hrsday*5 days= 25 total hours worked. Yup, I can deal with that paycheck every week.
And trust me, the stuff I listed above is very easy! (Granted... construction and computers has a bit more of a learning curve at first). But for radio its pretty simple: Learn how to remove dash pieces... add install kit.... and (hardest part!) connect COLOR CODED wires together with electrical tape (or solder). Put everything back together, and your done.
Point of the post: If no ones willing to give us a job, we got to make our own. EVERYONE has some skill to market. Good with kids? Babysitting or nanny. Great at science? Market yourself as a private tutor. Great at drawing? Small business design specialist. Brtue strength? Lawn mowing and minor landscapping services.
If I didn't list something, then post your talent and I'm possibly able to think of something. -insert protitution joke here- (jk....and I pray no one actually chooses that road... desperate times are trying... but ANYTHING is better than that).
There's always something. Just don't give up hope, and keep trying. It's hard, but in the end it will all be worth it. Heck, when the dream act passes, and you get your paperwork, you'll be able to chalk up small business experience to your life list.
I started as an unpaid intern. Thanks to the field I'm in, I'm able to work under the table...and that's how I have the job I have right now.
