So i decided to visit some friend's from high school in the city i use to live in and i knew the cops are jerks over there. But i decided to go anyways using the justification that i havent seen my friends in 2 and a half years. Lo' and behold, less then a mile from the house i get pulled over for a broken break light (the one at the top middle). I asked first, trying to he assertive and not scared, " Is there a problem officer?" He says stuff about the light, and ask for my license. I tell him "Well im on vacation so i handed him my FOREIGN DRIVER'S license." I remain cool and collective even though my mind was scared to death. and he asked me how long ive been in the states, I tell him a few days (reason being that foreign licenses are valid only 10 days upon arrival, or so ive heard). He then asked me where i was staying and where i was going. told him the truth (going to friend's house). And then asked for insurance, (gave him the one that my dad told me to give). Then he let me go. So there you go. I know there's alot of people here asking about driver's licenses and if it's safe and how to handle when getting pulled over. That's my experience and how i've been planning on saying it after reading countless forums labeled like this one. In all honestly, there is no fail safe way to handle it. You can only use other people's experiences and understand the law to increase your chances of not getting lock up and deported. How i get over that kind of stress is that I've accepted it. I was ready to get deported if that cop had been a jerk. Driving has huge benefits as well has terrible negatives. Everytime i turn on my car i tell myself to live with all the consequences, good or bad.

One thing i have a question about: is if police keep records of foreign licenses. this explanation to the officer works for me but if i were to get pulled over again i dont know wether to say i can back for another visit or it's my first time in a while. since there is a 10 day limit, i can't get pulled over for a while if they have me on record. soo... does anybody know if they keep records of foreign licenses?

^^its just you. Good stuff dayDreamer. I was pulled over once without any license, the cop was a jerk but I was let go without even a ticket so I was lucky.

I was lucky enough to be able to get an out of state DL, which is great because it is IMO 100x better than a foreign DL.

Keep your head up man, hopefully soon we will be able to drive and live regular lives without being scared.

Well I don't think they put your international license on the record just to see if your still here next time they stop you... but don't go by me, I'm just assuming. Cops nowadays all have computers in their cars so I wouldn't be surprised if they do put the license down in record. But again, it's assumption. I will say this though, if that same cop catches you again you will be fucked.

Wow! that was a close one.
i have never been pulled over by a cop ever, and i have been driving since i was 15.
I, personaly, wouldnt know how to react in a situation like that. I know many people in my situation who have been pulled over by police officers, and never have they been deported.
the wort case scenario would be the impound of their vehicle and a ticket, but thats it. I think your over reacting by claiming that police officers would deport you for driving while undocumented; well atlest over here in souther california.

Not something to be proud of, but back when i used to drive like it was nothing, i was pulled over more than twice. It was always with my dad's car, and luckily close enough to my home that the officers always believed i was just "practicing for my road test". I'd hand them over my school ID, debit cards, anything with my name on it, they run my name for warrants, and let me go, telling me to go straight home.

Ive driven for over 4 years, but stopped driving last year (08 ) because fear took over and i couldn't deal with the near heart attacks i had when a cop was in my rearview.

I wasn't pulled over for major offenses, just one time for taillight, one time for making turns without signaling (one in a million chance but that day i got that ONE), and another for suspicious vehicle matching the description of a stolen car in the area (scariest moment of my life and deciding factor for my not driving again till DA passes). Never got a ticket each time, God must really like me.

Excuses honestly go so far, but it always takes being careful. And not being painfully nervous, but most of all, NOT LYING.
Its waayyy better not to drive in our shoes, but if you feel the need to, just keep both hands on the wheel, signal, do the speed limit, stop FULLY at stop signs, and don't hit any old people please. (lol, just tryin to loosen the tension w/a lil humor).
