Hi, I have a potential job opportunity, but they asked me to bring a copy of my SS# card. Could I possibly use a Tax ID #? The job isn't anything serious.

By serious I mean it's not a full-time, complex job. Just a really simple/easy part-time job. So I dunno if that'll give me more leeway with the documents.

I want to call in and ask, but I don't want to just say 'Do you accept tax ID? I don't have an SS#.' I think I would feel kind of dumb, and I'm especially paranoid about them somehow using that info against me xD (not having a SS#)

Your ITIN is for taxes not employment.

There's really only one of two ways you can work in this country, given our situation. Let the employer know you don't have the documents or well, I'm not telling you to do it.. but most people work using fake SSN numbers and IDs. It doesn't affect you when you adjust your status so long as you're not using another persons identity.

Are there any risks involved in telling the employer I don't have them? I don't want that info used against me somehow..

I would say don't take the job since they seem to want to photocopy it or see it in person. You don't have one so you either have to get a fake one or tell the truth, either way it doesn't look good. I have never seen a fake one in person to see how real it looks, but I wouldn't bother since I think this might be too much since they actually want to see it in person.

I'm kinda in this situation myself cuz I'm going just posted an ad on craigslist to be a babysitter and got tons of replies. But I'm terrified of being asked for papers.

Not necessarily. Some people are understanding, but, of course, others not so much. I really don't think the average person would go so far as to report you to ICE. Also keep in mind that it's best if you look for work at smaller businesses. Basically, establishments that are not part of a big chain like Walgreens, Target, etc. The smaller the business, the less likely they are to verify whether or not you can legally work in the country.

Like I said, it's a pretty small business. I know someone who used to work there that got paid under the table, but I believe they changed it now.
