Cue "shaking fists at clouds" John McCain, who apparently thinks there's no room for human rights in the military. This is from his prepared statement, via e-mail:
"....We learned on Monday that before we go home for this election cycle, there will be no debate at all on the Defense Authorization Bill except for three amendments handpicked by the Majority Leader for narrow political reasons two months before an election. One of those amendments will be on banning the use of so-called ‘secret holds.’ Another will be on the DREAM Act, which allows the children of immigrants who entered the country illegally to become U.S. citizens.... The Majority Leader has no business putting these two amendments on the National Defense Authorization Act, and certainly not as two of only three amendments that will even get to be voted on at a time when our military is engaged in two wars overseas, and when numerous defense issues demand the Senate’s time.
It was actually a pretty fun floor speech to watch as McCain wound himself tighter and tighter. A tour de force of sputtering outrage from the Maverick. He might have a point that secret holds aren't particularly relevant to this legislation, but on DREAM Act and DADT, he's full of hot air.
The DREAM Act is specifically included in the DoD's strategic plan for the coming fiscal year. Military service is one of the paths to citizenship these young people could follow. Margaret Stock, a retired Lt. Col in the Army Reserve has stated:
Potential DREAM Act beneficiaries are also likely to be a military recruiter’s dream candidates for enlistment ... In a time when qualified recruits—particularly ones with foreign language skills and foreign cultural awareness – are in short supply, enforcing deportation laws against these young people makes no sense. Americans who care about our national security should encourage Congress to pass the DREAM Act.

Just a thought//////.............
From what I remember, Sen Reid said he wouldn't bring Dream Act to a vote if He didn't have the votes necessary to pass it.
So..........
Do you guys think He is sure he has the 60 votes? if He is willing to take the risk and bring it to the floor for a vote this time.?

we are in the tough situation now. the reason Sen Reid bring Dream Act to vote because 2 reason: 1, his own state election, NV has many Latino voters, and he want to get more attention when he bring up some immigration issue up to the table. 2, it is a political shows, and Democrat wants to show Latinos voters, that they still care about immigration issue at the LAST MINS.

my question is if democrat really care about immigration issue, why they bring up the Dream Act at the last min(before the election)? even these they know they are going to fail, but they can still blame that is republican faults to block immigration bill pass (this is my opinions)

His vote won't make a difference anyway. It will pass.

I do understand that Mr. Obama has put off immigration for quite some time, but at the same time I understand that when he took office, our president inhereted an economic mess, on the brink of a second depression, I am also very proud that he has committed in passing other long overdue legislation, such as the HealthCare, Bringing the troops from Irak, Financial regulation and more... Good grief let's stop for a few minutes and thank this president for of his work that he has done already, and as he said to a Hispanic audience not too long ago, and I am paraphrasing, 'its ok to give him and his administration for many things that have not be been accomplish, because that is part of our democracy, to hold people accountable for their actions', this president wants immigration reform, and most definetly the DA, but lets us look at the senate dynamics, and how tough it is to get any bill, regardeless of how common senseble it might, it wont pass at times, he has for the most part all of the republicants againts all of his policies! I hope for the DREAM ACT to pass next week but let's also give Mr. Obama a fair judgment of his work in this past months! Thank you
