I'm planning on taking a short trip to Louisiana, I'm obviously undocumented, and I'm not really sure which to take. As well, if it's safe for me to do so. My College's ID doesn't have a picture, so I would be traveling with a colombian passport. When I called greyhound, they told me I don't even need an ID to buy the ticket.
Should I even take this trip?

I would not risk it. If you travel in New York I have heard that there are plenty of check points specially close to the border.

Well I would be traveling From Penn Station, or perhaps from Newark NJ, I thought the checkpoints were closer to Upstate New York near the border.
But thank you.

ICE randomly checks people on Amtrak and Greyhound anywhere near a land or maritime border. Most of New York is within 100 miles of one of those borders so there's a chance that they may conduct a sweep of the bus or the train. I would suggest not going. If you really want to go, you could find a small bus company that does regional trips -- I know that in NYC there are chinatown busses that go to DC or New Jersey and what have you. Get on one of those busses and then catch greyhound from somewhere further in land.

I think one of the mods on this board was taking a trip to NY and got caught by ICE. I wouldn't risk it. Take a road trip with your friends or something but avoid Amtrak and Greyhound.

Yup, that was abbadon. Take a plane. BUT.... I just realized.. the route to Louisiana is in the South so you could get by on amtrak. But yes, It would be wiser to take a plane or have a roadtrip!

I did some research and this is what I found :

As much as news go, almost all the reported cases come from Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo of New York and Erie of PA. So If you are undocumented and want to ride a train on upstate new york, the chances of getting caught is very high. I haven't heard of any BP searches being conducted in cities farther away from the border. It's only within the 75 miles of the border for now but they might increase it in the future.

road trip is not a choice right now

But if I add Chinatown to my plans, I have two options.

Take Chinatown from NY to DC,
GREYHOUND:
which transfers In Virginia, and Georgia... going through southern states like Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, alabama, Missouri than New orleans.
and the same goes for the trip back, but the transfers are in Alabama, Georgia.
than take Chinatown from DC to NY

or take Chinatown from NY to DC again
AMTRAK
which seems to be straight to from DC to New Orleans.
but on the return trip, it stops in Chicago, Illinois (and i don't know how safe that is, since it is kind of close to the norther border)
than Chinatown back from DC to NY.

which seems like a better plan?

thank you guys so much for the advice.

OR, i just saw a new alternative, which is a chinatown bus from New York to Birmingham, Alabama, then amtrak or Greyhound to New Orleans.
And return in Amtrak/Greyhound from New Orleans to Alabama than Chinatown bus back to New York.

Are chinatown buses safe?

I live in Chicago come to Chicago and then go south. No checkpoints around this area. Illinois is liberal country. I have driven without a licence all the way to Kansas from here and I have never had any ICE stops.
