What is the safest and best method to travel within the USA. I am not taking Greyhound since I heard that Immigration checks those sometimes. What about Amtrak. Is that any safer or is it just as Bad.

What companies like Buses are safe to travel on.
What trains are safe To Travel on.

Any experiences or knowledge would be appreciated. Since I plan on traveling later. on
by bus or train but need your help deciding on how to ride

Where are you traveling from/to? In the Northeast, Amtrak should not be a problem at all. Can't say the same if you're closer to the border though. If you're away from the border, Amtrak is the safest bet. Buy your ticket online and get it at the ticket machine or booth. College ID should be good enough.

Border Patrols can get on-board Greyhound or Amtrak if you are within 200 miles of any border (north and south). To my knowledge, it's safe if you are NOT within 200 miles of the border. Please correct me if there is any evidence that suggests that my assumptions are in error.

Are they more likely to check by the southern border as opposed to Canada/USA border?

I thought it was 100 Miles of the Border. Not 200 Well can you give me a rough estimate from a map perspective

No, you are in very high risk if you're traveling say on amtrak near Buffalo, NY. The northern border is where many many immigrants face problems when traveling.

I became secretly jealous when I read Provo, UT.

Greyhound and Amtrak signed an agreement with Border Patrol ( I believe in 2005) which would allow them to search people in any train/bus station 100 miles within the border.

Edit: I lived in Tucson, AZ for 5 months ( last summer) and I wasn't aware that there were about 5 checkpoints in that city until I moved back to New Jersey. Anyhow, like I said there are many in Tucson, AZ. You will encounter checkpoints on :

AZ: Tucson, Yuma, Phoenix, Nogales, Bisbee,
NM: Albuequerque
TX: El Paso

I'm sure there are many more in TX, CA, AZ, NM but these were the only ones I could think of at the moment.

"The Border Patrol is allowed to set up roadblocks as far as 100 miles from any national border, and it operates 33 permanent and numerous other "tactical" or movable checkpoints on the Mexican and Canadian frontiers. In the Southwest, checkpoints are typically found on California's north-south I-5, numerous small highways near Mexico, such as Arizona's Highway 86, and along I-10 between Tucson and El Paso, Texas. The Border Patrol sometimes puts up movable checkpoints on I-10 between Phoenix and Los Angeles, but it's rare to encounter one."

Good luck!

Last thing, I promise.

In the US, the checkpoints will be generally pretty close to the border and will check northbound traffic only. It is an immigration checkpoint but there will usually be dogs trained to detect narcotics as well as hidden people. Southbound traffic is not checked.

In Mexico the checkpoints check going both north and southbound. Southbound checks immigration documents (you can go within generally 15 or so kilometers into Mexico without documents. To go further you need to get proper documentation at the frontera/borderzone. Do you like that I threw a little espanol in there?) Northbound traffic is checked for narcotics.

Mexican checkpoints are also routinely staffed by military as well.
