How Do Ethnic Media Say “Illegal Immigrant?”

Before publishing a story on immigration, every editor faces a question: What term should be used to describe an immigrant who is in the United States illegally?

The AP Stylebook states that the preferred term is “illegal immigrant”—but that “illegal” should not be used as a noun. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists advocates the use of the term “undocumented immigrant” or “undocumented worker.” A campaign headed by the Applied Research Center and its news site ColorLines – called “Drop the ‘i’ Word” – considers “illegal” a slur and is calling on media outlets across the country to take a pledge to stop using the term.

I'm glad someone's doing something about this, because, it's true, no human being is illegal!

Ah...I agree. However, that would mean that calling someone who's here without authorization (which I suppose is the technical term) an "illegal" is bad. Which it is.

What's the issue with illegal immigrant as long as you don't contract it to "illegal"? It's not saying that everyone entered illegally; it's saying that they immigrated (different from entering) illegally.

They use the terms "poorly-documented immigrant" or "immigrant with deficient documentation".

Who cares; it is like calling a gas pumper a petroleum dispensement engineer.
