So I need to go to Austin this Friday and I am in Laredo, a border city. I decided to take a Bus over there and show my college ID in the BP checkpoint. I need to risk it because I am tired of missed opportunities. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks

If your plan is to try to tell them you are a U.S. citizen, they may ask for state-issued ID.

If you're not careful, they won't give you the chance to take it back and will accuse you of misrepresentation, which is a felony and carries a lifetime ban. That said, if you're lucky, they'll wave you on. But if you're on a bus, I find this pretty doubtful.

You'll be walking, almost literally, into the lion's den. Are you going to be leaving Laredo permanently?

If I ever found myself in the situation, I'd just tell them that I'm a student, nothing more. Don't lie. Definitely take the trip. You're not living in nazi Germany or something. This is your right and don't let the fear stop you. What's going to happen will happen.

Why don't you just walk around the checkpoint?
And it might be a good idea because of the new ICE memo, you might do some time but end up with a work permit.

I would not depend on this though. We're still getting e-mails about students on deportation. Point of the matter is even with this DHS policy, Obama's administration CAN'T be trusted. It is just a political ploy to keep Latinos interested.

I was about to post a link to a diff post about going to Austin, but realized it was posted by you as well. Wondered what the end result was - I guess it' hasn't happened yet.

There has got to be others around you that have traveled to Austin - do you know anyone that has made the trip? Personally once I passed the checkpoint I would try not to return to the border area.... I know it might a necessity though.

Good luck to you.
