LEMARS, Iowa (Reuters) - Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney said on Saturday he would veto a proposal granting U.S. citizenship to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country as children, a pledge that won hearty applause from Iowa conservatives he hopes to win over.
A young woman asked Romney about the bipartisan proposal known as the Dream Act, during an appearance at a crowded restaurant in Le Mars, a conservative Republican stronghold in western Iowa.
"The question is if I were elected and Congress were to pass the Dream Act, would I veto it and the answer is yes," Romney said.
"For those that come here illegally, the idea of giving them in-state tuition credits or other special benefits, I find to be contrary to the idea of a nation of laws," Romney said.
"If I'm the president of the United States I want to end illegal immigration so that we can protect legal immigration. I like legal immigration."
Under the Dream Act, which was brought up in the Senate in May, young undocumented immigrants who have lived most of their lives in the United States and graduate from U.S. high schools would be eligible for a conditional six-year "path to citizenship" if they earn a college degree or serve two years in the military.
Romney also said he would secure the U.S.-Mexico border with a fence and enough Border Patrol agents to guard it.
The remarks drew vigorous applause in Le Mars and at a later appearance in Sioux City. Romney said he would eliminate the "magnet" that draws illegal immigrants by cracking down on employers who hire them.
"We need to give those employers the tools they need to determine who's legal and illegal," he said. "But if they have those tools and don't use them, we're going to go after them just like we go after employers who don't pay their taxes," Romney said.
He said he would continue a provision that grants a fast track to citizenship for foreigners who serve in the military.
Romney has led in the opinion polls ahead of Tuesday's Iowa caucus, which kicks off the state-by-state contests to choose the Republican presidential candidate who will challenge President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 general election.
But he has not sealed the deal with some Iowa Republicans who doubt his conservative credentials because of his history as governor of left-leaning Massachusetts.
"We need a staunch conservative to the max and I just don't see it in anybody other than (Rick) Santorum," said Pat Renken, a Le Mars resident who manages a grain elevator. He turned out at a Romney rally despite planning to vote for Santorum, a conservative former senator from Pennsylvania.
"There's nothing that turns me off about him (Romney)," Renken said. "I just like Senator Santorum more."

To those of you who say Obama hasn't done anything for us and he lied, etc. etc. etc., At least he wouldn't veto the bill. Make no mistake, let me be clear (heh), no Republican is the friend of immigrants - both legal or um, "otherwise".

Really, a Romney political campaign promise makes a headline in this forum?

2008: Obama vows to introduce immigration reform plan in first 100 days of his presidency.
2009: Obama says immigration reform will need to wait until next year.
2010: Obama says that without Republican support, there's nothing he can do to help illegal immigrants.
2011: Obama vows to "improve" legal immigration and pass the Dream Act. In the meantime, his administration uses the Justice department and DHS to continue to issue deportation orders against long-time undocumented residents and continues to incarcerate so-called "low priority" individuals in detention.

2012: From the NY Times: "President Obama is heading into his re-election campaign with plans to step up his offensive against an unpopular Congress, concluding that he cannot pass any major legislation in 2012 because of Republican hostility toward his agenda."
“There are certainly other things the president would like to do,” Mr. Earnest said, citing other provisions of the jobs bill. “But in terms of essential, must-do items, the payroll tax cut extension is the last one.”

If Romney happens to win (and I don't believe he will), and vetoes the DA, what exactly changes for you and me? If Obama wins, but is unable or unwilling to fight for passage of the DA, how will that day be different from the last 10 years that DA hasn't passed?

The difference in terms of probability is having no chance at all versus having even a little bit of a chance. If I were a betting man, I would take 10% over 0% any day.
And Obama will fight for Dream Act and Immigration reform either before or after he's re-elected. I remember posting an article a while back that showed Obama's success rate in the House and Senate on votes where he staked out a clear position was 96.7 percent.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/newswee...n-day-lbj.html

You mention Obama called for the passage of immigration reform in his first hundred days. This was a promise made before the October/November 2008 crash of the stock market. This was before Americans lost 700,000 jobs in January of 2009, 600,000 in February, 600,000 in March. Imagine calling for legalization of 10 million people in the midst of the worst recession since the G.D. Another campaign promise was healthcare reform, which un-expectantly took up most of his first year. What was he to choose to abandon his signature legislation in pursuit of Immigration Reform? You have to realize that Americans take priority, and given the choice between them and us, he chose to focus on them.

All this Obama bashing on this blog is sickening. Immigration reform will be debated when the right time comes, with a more stable economy. For now, we should be glad that we haven't failed yet, and that their is still hope. Romney will deport all of you if it was up to him.

@#6: I call BS. A political vow, whether it comes from the left or the right, is pure political spin. All stakeholders involved in immigrants' rights - legislators, lawyers, advocates (the real ones, not the pieces of s*** entrenched in DC circles like America's Voice, NCLR, etc) - have called the administration on its lies for playing both sides.

I mean, Rep.Gutierrez has been calling on Obama's lies now for almost four years. Surely, he doesn't want a Republican in the White House. But, but , but...If a Republican is successful in passing CIR, Gutierrez sure would vote for it. CIR supporters in Congress will sign legislation that passes both houses no matter who sits in the White House. The Obama "bashing" is taking place here, @dreamactivist.org; @change.org; etc, etc, etc; because it is the truth.

Obama will win, I believe; but, what we need, we'll take from whoever hands it to us. That is the reality.

There goes Mitt Romney's 2012 hopes. No way Latinos will let him win with that type of rhetoric.

I don't know why you guys are so dead set that that 9 percent of the electorate is so much more important than the other 91 percent as far as getting elected. There are more pissed off white rednecks then there are latinos who are registered to vote, and the redneck vote is only a small part of the white vote
