I tried transferring my past earnings to my new social number and fear of getting in trouble.

It happens to be that the number I was working with belongs to someone-- and I could possible be accused of identity theft.

They are going to look into it and will get back to me..

I didn't see this coming.

I will keep you all posted.

You shouldn't have tried to transfer earnings from a SSN that was never issued to you.....WHY?!

That said, what's done is done. Identity theft is a criminal offense although depending on the court, you might not get convicted under federal identity theft laws because you didn't knowingly use another person's SSN. Did you use your name with that number?

I would advise getting a lawyer.

About 2 years ago when my father became a resident-I presented his W2's and they transferred all without a problem. (maybe because that old number didn't exist-didn't belong to anyone.

Yesterday I had a new soc sec employee- or so it seemed. She had to ask someone and then I had to wait to see a case worker. I thought it was going to be easy.
I didn't know the social number belonged to someone. I still worked under my name. I never used the number for anything else, but to work for three different companies in over 10 years.

Well wish me luck guys--- that nothing serious happens.

I posted this as lesson learned and hopefully it helps others.

In Accounting terms, we refer to this as SUNK costs. Forget about it brah and move on with your brand new SSN. Don't give it to anyone. Use it where needed. Keep it at home. Just know the number. Whip it out only when you need to show it to authorities like the DMV or at your job human resources or whatever.

I'm not sure how being accused of identity theft works but the way I see it wouldn't it be identity theft if you not only use the number but also name?

Also I'm wondering would it be that much you have paid that you just can't leave as is?

Well I wish I would have left it alone-- but the thing is I was dumb enough to think that it was no problem. It wasn't a lot- 19,000 every year for 5 years-- I just thought that I was doing the right thing. I already spoke with them and provided all my info and they made copies of everything. She said she was going to research this and see the end result because she didn't even know- but she kept saying, "that's identity theft".

So worried....

I was ready to move on and I made this stupid error!

Make sure you don't make it.

Sucks but I believe I read somewhere that if you were unaware it was a real number then you won't get in trouble for it. Anyone back me up here?

You only put it down for working correct?

I'll try to find where I read this.
