Hi guys.. Since I got my EAD card I was patiently waiting for my chance to finally

get my SSN. However, hurricane Sandy hits the east side hard so I couldn't get out

from my house

So today is actually exactly 10 days since my EAD issue date, so I had to travel to

downtown (In here, I can't go to local SSA if I'm going to apply for SSN for the first

time, I have to go to Social Security Card Center) to get my SSN.

When I went there, I was kinda nervous... idk why lol

I told the lady in the reception window that I came here to apply for SSN.

She asked me "Is this your first time?" I said "yes"

Then she smiled me back (she was super kind lady) and hand me the application

and told me to fill out and wait until your number is called.

There were lots of people sitting there, so I thought it's going to take at least 30 min

of waiting but they were handling case separately and fast so that mine was called

just 5 min after

Btw, I marked "legal alien allowed to work" and "unknown" for my parents SSN.

They guy who looked at my application asked me to show my passport and

he didn't even ask me about birth certificate even though I brought in

Then he asked "Are you a foreign student?"

I said " No, actually I got my EAD card" and I showed it to him. He didn't even asked

me further and processed... typed in all the info and make sure my name and address

was right. Then within 5 minutes, I got my receipt for SSN card. He told me that

it should be mailed in 7~10 days.

I'm so happy for now and as soon as I get my SSN card I will apply for ID and DL.

good luck to you all!

P.S. don't say anything about deferred action unless they ask about it. It just might

get more complicated (I think..) if you explain your status first

Congrats! I did the same yesterday.

Does your paper show your SSN? DMW will need the paper with your SSN listed to process your Id or DL

You can go back in 2 business days - 48 business hours- and ask them to print out the document stating your SSN. That's what I am planning on doing Monday. The lady who helped me was very helpful. She said to bring along the paper they gave us (stating you applied), and a valid ID. She said they do it all the time and said as soon as you show them these two documents, they'll know exactly what you want.

Yep! Wait at least 2 days and you can get a print out! That's what I did and the number assigned to you will appear on the sheet of paper. Make sure its stamped! Apply for your ID and DL as soon as you can, why not right? You can also start applying online and all that good stuff!

I went in the next day and got it. You dont have to wait the 48 hrs. Then headed to DMV right after that.

Well I actually first called because my Social security office is about 45 minutes away lol. I just asked "Good morning, I applied for an original SSN 2 days ago, I was wondering if my number has been generated?"

The guy was polite and very nice and said "Yes, you may pick up a print out or you can wait a week or so to receive it in the mail"

So I suggest you at least wait 1 day and call to make sure you're number has been generated. Here's how you can get the number of your local office https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp Just type your zip code. Best of luck!
