What is the social for?

Do people apply for it because they want an ID/DL? you don't need it to work right?

I just got my EAD & thought it would have instructions to apply for a SSN since everyone on here talks about it. Did u guys just google & figure it out?

You need an SSN to work, do your taxes, apply for an ID/DL, open a bank account, apply for credit cards, apply for loans, obtain home services like electricity, gas, etc.

Without the SSN you pretty much can't do anything with your EAD alone, not even work....

Go here, https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp enter your zip code to find the closest SSA office and take your EAD and Birth Certificate/Passport and apply for an SSN.

You need it to file taxes, identity, and finance purposes. Also in the future if you do become a permanent resident or citizen you can get ss benefits.

Pretty much that number tells the govt. who you are.

The main function of the Social Security number is to establish your retirement funds over your years of work, but pretty much everything asks for a SSN.

Wow you been living in the US for this long and don't know what a SSN is for? Wow. My 8 year old niece knows that!

Please educate yourself as much as you can on how the system works. Branches of goverment and branches of USCIS. Just how stuff works in general. I'm guessing you have never worked before. Get familiar with W-2 etc...

Oh god.. Just don't even bother applying for one if you don't know what it does.
