hey guys, sorry if this may seem like a repost from somebody elses topic but i guess everyone here is in the same situation . i came here with a visitor visa back in 97 and overstayed. I turned 21 this year and my father became a permanent resident through marriage with a us citizen. I never pushed my dad to marry someone he didn't want for papers hence the late chance for me. I wanted to know if it was possible for him to somehow sponsor me since he will be planning on becomes a us citizen in 3 years from now. Thnx!

only my parents are on their way to be citizens
and i wont for a while since i m over 21.

the answer is yes.
he can sponsor u when he becomes a citizen in 3 years.... it will just take forever
but if u are willing to wait... go to uni in the meantime etc go ahead

Hey... sorry to hijack the thread but...

I'm 19, if my mom marries a US citizen, can she file for me too?
I know it usually takes about 6 months for the spouse to get the resicency... how long would it take if the files papers for me at the same time?... (can she file for me at the same time?)

Someone also mentioned something about my stepfather being able to file for me instead...

I wonder which way would be fastest...

Any ideas?

PS. I came here on a visa back in 2000, but overstayed

Okay we obviously need a sticky for this topic because it keeps popping up:

You can be sponsored through a family member if he/she is a citizen or a permanent resident (green card)

Citizens can sponsor:

Husband or wife
Unmarried child under 21 years of age
Unmarried son or daughter over 21
Married son or daughter of any age
Brother or sister, if the sponsor is at least 21 years old, or
Parent, if the sponsor is at least 21 years old.

Permanent Residents can sponsor:

Husband or wife, or
Unmarried son or daughter of any age.

If you don't believe me, this comes straight from the website of USCIS

No, it's just your son/daughter... check the link that was posted a few replies ago.
