Hi DAP

I wanted to ask you all something.

I started Community College in February, and the experience is awesome. From the campus, to fellow students, to the classes.

At the moment I am only taking 2 classes, Sociology and Algebra.

I am really loving the Algebra class, the weird thing is I thought I was going to dread and hate math.

I love the problem solving aspect of it, once I learn a formula or the way something works, I am eager to do the homework to solve the problems. I love the feeling of completing an entire assignment. I love the feeling of competition in the class when I get a high grade on a test.

Is this a good sign that I should pursue a math heavy major? Physics? Computer Science? Accounting? Mathematics? Chemistry?

Or is it premature of me to think I love math when I have only experienced Algebra?

Next semester I will be doing trigonometry and that may help me determine better if I do indeed like math, but it seems I do, but most importantly it seems I love the problem solving aspect of it.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

There is also the dilemma of majoring in a math major that doesn't really have great job prospects too...lol...but I am generally very glad that I like the math, because it was my biggest fear in college, next to public speaking (yikes, I really really want to find a way to cure stage fright)

If you like math, you should seriously consider engineering. There are some many opportunities for engineering. I have family member with math degree and he is having a very hard time getting a job. I'm in my third year of engineering and I have not problem getting internship.

Absolutely, go for it and don't look back. Any major that doesn't involve logical thinking and technical skills is a waste of time and money. Try CS next.

Here's my story. I failed a math class in high school. I used to read Stephen King books in my algebra class and the teachers just let me do it because they gave up on me.

(Nothing wrong with Stephen King, I still like him and have a lot of respect for good fiction writers.)

When I started college I was 100% sure that I wanted to major in French/German/Russian literature and history, or international business.

Then I took an algebra class over the summer, the professor was really cool, so I switched my major to math. Took a programming class the following summer and loved it, so I switched my major to CS. Read Cosmos by Carl Sagan and decided to take a few physics courses too, and it ended up become my second major. I'm doing an internship at IBM now and can't imagine doing anything else. And I didn't have to give up French - I have a minor in it.

And it's not all about the money - math, science, programming, etc, IS FUN!

Yeah, math is fun and it might be a worthwhile experience expanding on what you like as it gives incentive to learn. If you're gonna be learning Trig next just remember SOH CAH TOA and learning Unit circle values now could be quite helpful.

I've always been intimidated by Engineering, but I may just try it out. I've even thought about trying out Physics for the heck of it.

I am thinking about Computer Science and actually try programming again, maybe this time it won't bore me. I remember trying to learn it on my own a long time ago but got bored. I think the mistake I made back then is trying to learn it on my free time, but if it is part of my curriculum I may just start appreciating it more.

If you can get past calculus, then Math is for you. I'm a Math major and like you, I loved Algebra. When I got to Calculus, it was a lot more challenging. But if you pass it and still like it, the rest will be a piece of cake for you.

This is not true. Proof based classes like linear algebra are a whole different thing.

How old are you? Some people grow to understand Math.

I used to hate Math in elementary school and up until Junior Year in High School. Then, something happened and I could understand it better than peanut butter and jelly. I took multiple math-related AP classes simultaneously; AP Cal, AP Stat, AP Econ and AP Physics, with AP Art History and Psy on the side. It was so much fun.
