Powerful Democratic senators are considering including a measure in the Senate’s defense authorization bill that would offer legal status to young undocumented immigrants who join the military.
With a similar effort in the House stalled, the Senate might provide a new opportunity for immigration advocates. But some senators are warning that including the proposal could sink the annual defense bill, one of the few must-pass bills remaining in Congress.

I wouldn't mind the attempt.

It won't happen. 1, we're moving towards peace time. and 2, plenty of my USC friends, recent graduates and such have been tryna get into various branches of the military and have been turned away or given some insanely long wait time so they're deciding to not go through with it.

and we can't be officers, so its not like the high skilled would benefit.

Amending is bullshit. The bill should be written to already contain immigration provisions.

You can naturalize instantly once on a battle zone.

You can naturalize instantly as long as you either see active combat or serve during wartime. Believe it or not but the Iraq and Afghanistan wars count as wartime for purposes of naturalization.

If memory serves we're still technically considered to be engaged in hostilities, so even now one could theoretically naturalize almost instantly. In practice the military requires at least a year of service though.

As for the remark about having included this in the NDAA initially, they tried but the committee was against it. IMO a watered down Dream Act shouldn't be what we opt for.

P.S. Fun fact, we haven't declared war since WW2. There was no 'war' in Iraq or Afghanistan. It was all kinetic actions, temporary hostilities, or some other newspeak.
