Hello,

I have the opportunity to work part-time at a local UPS branch near me, but there's a problem. The owner there wants to pay me under-the-table, and says that there won't be any problems if I report to IRS to pay my taxes.

However, I feel as if this could cause a lot of problems for me, especially when I am applying to renew my DACA and the work authorization permit.

UPS is government-owned. When I file my taxes, is it okay to put UPS as my employeer on the form? Or do I put self-employed? Since the UPS is government-owned, I would think that it might raise red flags if the store branch didn't mention me, but I did in my forms.

I never had a job before, so I don't know too much about filing taxes and such.
If I do start earning now, do I not have to file my income until the next tax year?

Sincerely,
-DreamyDream

You will probably be considered a contractor for UPS, and will have to file taxes as self employed. I wouldnt worry so much about DACA but how much taxes youll actually end up paying.

Thank you for your quick reply!

Since I will be paid under-the-table, I don't think I will have any titles, such as "a contractor". I doubt that they will even report that they have a new employee. From what I've heard, it's family-owned and that they officially reported that only the family works there.

That's why I am a bit concerned, as I (new employee) will not be mentioned at all when they file for taxes.

Is this a cause for concern? Will I be okay as long as I just pay taxes as self-employed, regardless of the UPS being government-owned?

Thank you for your reply!

Sorry, it seems that I have made a mistake. United States Postal Service (USPS) is the postal service that is managed by the government, not the United Parcel Service (UPS).

I will be working as a cashier, managing packages, labeling packages, etc. - pretty much everything a employee does at a postal service job.

Even though UPS isn't managed by the government, will there be any problems for me as mentioned in my previous posts?

Its up to you if you want to report that income. It is recommended that you file though.

I am going to be reporting the income, but I wasn't sure if it would cause problems if I report it but the owner at the UPS branch doesn't.

You will declare it as your "own business." One thing, you will have to save money from your own to pay for taxes.

Hey, First of all..it just seems very bizarre to me that a huge company like UPS would be offering you a job like that off the books. That said, this would have no effect on DACA. DACA strictly follows the rules of I-821D. If you meet the criteria under 821D, you qualify for an EAD. Secondly, if you have earned income this year, you must file and report income in your 2014 return which will be due by April 15th of next year, 2015. You need to get clarification. Will you receive a 1099 ? If your "employer" claims Subcontractor Expense, then surely you will be issued a 1099 and you must report that and pay self-employment taxes.

Thank you g33k and 2Face for the replies!

It seems bizarre for me too. Regardless, though, I should be okay as long as I file my tax form as self-employed by April 15th, 2010?
