I purchased a new 2016 Acura ILX back in 2015 and had put in 21k miles to it. The dealer serviced the car recently and mentioned that the brakes are 3mm and 4mm and needed to be replaced. Is this normal for an Acura brand to have the brakes replaced at 20-21k? Seems odd to me, I have never abused this car whatsoever. They quoted me 750 for everything.

If not, any suggestions on how to proceed? I already emailed Acura Client Relations but they told me to work it out with the dealer. lol

Thank you

The millage isn't really an indicator of when pads go back since you could drive a lot more highway miles and the pads could last longer vs. city driving. Also, OEM brake pads tend to not last as long. Have you had your brake warning light come on or are you hearing the squealing sound of the "alarm" from your pads? Most brake pads are 12mm so you've used 1/4 of it already. You can probably squeeze out another 5000 miles if you haven't already hit any alarms but that's up to you.

$750 does sound a bit steep but then you have a luxury line at a dealer so everything is more expensive. Are they changing the rotors too? I doubt that are. Anyway, again it's up to you. You can go much cheaper for just a pad change and machining rotors at a local shop and after market parts. Or hell, you can do it yourself. Then again, it's a new car and you have a warranty and such....

Are they screeching? Take it to another dealership and since you bought it brand new (warranty usually ends at 36k or 3 years) have them do an inspection.

Better yet, jack up the car and take off the tire. Inspect the brake pads yourself.

To answer your question, fuck that! new brake pads at 21k that is bullshit specially when the car is new. What they give you old used brake pads?

Unless you drive like a maniac, I do not see how the brake pads are at that level.

That's strange. I would check those pads myself if I were you. If it really is 3mm, change them. The car should still be under warranty. Read it.

Sometimes dealership do some weird shady stuff, not all dealers are the same even within the same brand. I've had this happen at Toyota before. For example, I went in for an oil change, they didn't change it. All they did was clean the engine bay. Wasted half a day there.

According to the other dealer, they claim to do the job and charge the costumer anyway, or if it's under warranty, they'll charge Toyota (free money). Sometimes they'll put in cheap aftermarket replacement parts. So if you want TRD/ Toyota branded stuff, you'll have to explicitly ask for it and it's a lot more expensive. I believe Honda uses Advics/ Aisin/ Honda brands.

They do.
Denso is partly-owned by Toyota, but they also supply to other manufacturers.

Denso and Aisin are top notch. Unfortunately, amazon is the only place I can find them since Vatozone mostly carries their crappy Duralast brands and maybe a few semi-name brands
