Ever since last September I have been living off my $20,000 capital one credit card (paying rent, food, gas, utilities..etc) instead of my liquid cash in my checking account. My thinking at the time was that if worse comes to worse with DACA I wouldn't have to pay back the outstanding balance.(I do currently make monthly payments, just not in full) Is this a bad financial strategy?

Are you paying interest on the balance?

If you are, I don't think it's the best strategy, but maybe you can open another card that offers a 0% interest for a few months while the DACA debate gets settled.

I think it depends on if your strategy is lowering your credit score. If you’re near the 20k limit and it’s messing up your credit score then you qualify for less credit. I would suggest maintaining a good credit score so that you can increase your limits and apply for more credit over time. That way you can hypothetically leverage $40k instead of $20k incase the stuff hits the fan. Also you’ll not have a ton of credit card debt incase stuff doesn’t hit the fan. I mean it’s been 9 months since September and we’re still here. If you’re really worried about cash then consider a second job. Maybe uber or something and save ALL of your earnings. Maybe you can change your W2 witholdings to bring more money home (although you will end up owing that money if you file taxes).

I did this for a while until my 0% apr offer expired. Then I had to pay like 8k. No biggie.

Looking for other cards with 0% apr sometime next year a few months before my EAD expires again.

I only use liquid cash for my daily purchases. I made the mistake of using too many credit cards in the past and it took a while to get out of that hole. I would only use them if I knew for sure that I was leaving. At that point fu*k it, Vegas it is.

I am more careful with that, until i know what will happen with daca, i am going to stay in good standing. If i am going to be deported ...... all bets are off.

Yest it is. You should only do so when out of status and know for sure ain't nothing replacing DACA. As it is, interests will eat you alive if legalized.
